A new short film for Battlefield 2042 confirms the game is a sequel to Battlefield 4, as characters like Kimble "Irish" Graves from the 2013's single-player campaign are making a return. Battlefield 2042 takes place roughly 22 years after the events of Battlefield 4, which can be seen in Irish's greying hair.
Although Battlefield 2042 doesn't have a campaign, it seems like developer DICE isn't quite done fleshing out what is arguably the most detailed narrative the series has seen to date. In Battlefield 2042, the world is even more politically divided than it was in Battlefield 4, with countries ravaged by the effects of climate change and a massive global refugee crisis well underway. Due to the chaotic nature of the geopolitical situation, a conflict on a scale dwarfing Battlefield 4's world war is sparked, and many displaced refugees known as "No-Pats" are fighting at the center of it. A new short film, Exodus, shines a greater light on the multiplayer lore implications and Battlefield's direct connection to Battlefield 4.
Battlefield 4's Irish and Clayton "Pac" Pakowski return in the Battlefield 2042: Exodus short film, which sees Irish as the leader of the No-Pats. The former Marine has abandoned the United States in favor of helping the world's refugees and a group that seems to work in the shadows. As a result, Irish comes into possession of a briefcase containing the coordinates of an experimental weapon, perhaps setting up the narrative behind the Hazard Zone mode. EA also confirmed in a blog post that Irish will be a playable Specialist in Battlefield 2042, where he'll be able to deploy shields for cover during combat.
For a game with no campaign, DICE and its co-developers has made a significant effort to provide plenty of backstory in Battlefield 2042. Whether or not any of this will be meaningful in the context of gameplay isn't a sure thing, as it could prove completely inconsequential when players are hashing it out in multiplayer matches. It's no less surprising the developer brought back characters from a previous entry in the series, though, as each game tends to stand alone (with the Battlefield: Bad Company series being a rare exception).
Battlefield 2042's status as a Battlefield 4 sequel may only tie it back to old characters, but it's possible the new entry could also circle back to some of the events in that game's campaign and build upon them. Having adopted a live-service model, it seems DICE is determined to ensure Battlefield 2042's lore-driven story will continue to evolve with updates well after it launches.
Battlefield 2042 will be available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC on October 22, 2021.
