Barry Season 3 Set Photo Confirms Filming Has Started

A photo from the set of Barry season 3 confirms filming is officially underway. The HBO tragicomedy stars Bill Hader as Barry Berkman, a highly skilled hitman who travels to Los Angeles to take out a target but inadvertently falls into an acting career. Barry managed to transcend its sketch-show premise to become one of HBO's most acclaimed half-hour series in years, thanks to veteran showrunner Alec Berg (Curb Your Enthusiasm and Silicon Valley) and a well-rounded cast of unique character actors. Season 2, in particular, was beloved as the show's audience grew significantly and the explosive finale left viewers immediately craving season 3.

As with everything else, the pandemic, unfortunately, shut down season 3 production on March 18, 2020, right as cameras were set to roll. The silver lining of the 17-month delay is that the writers were able to pen all of the season 3 and 4 scripts, confirming the Barry team is more than ready to step back into their dangerous acting underworld. While Hader has been careful in interviews about keeping season 3 details under wraps, fans just got their first confirmation that production has finally kicked off.

Series star Henry Winkler tweeted a photo from the season 3 set and confirmed Monday, August 2, as the first day of filming. The legendary TV actor, who plays Barry's self-absorbed acting coach Gene Cousineau, posted a picture of a prop poster promoting Cousineau's stage adaptation of David Lynch's 1980 historical drama The Elephant Man. No season 3 release date has been set this early in production, but filming will likely last about three months since the second season was filmed from September 2018 to December 2018. It's also worth noting that, despite already being written, HBO hasn't officially renewed Barry for a season 4. However, HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys revealed back in February that it's a "safe bet" the show will be picked up again, as the dynamic award-winning duo of Hader and Winkler seems too good for the network to stop investing in.

Though it feels like he's always been around, Winkler can certainly thank Barry for his phenomenal career resurgence lately. He finally won his first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Cousineau, which is truly shocking considering this is the same actor who made a cultural icon out of "The Fonz" nearly 50 years ago. If season 3 of Barry proves to be just as thrilling and hilarious as the first two seasons, Winkler could very well see his third straight nomination, a feat he hasn't repeated since the '70s.
