Yokai Inn Will Fix One Of Animal Crossing's Biggest Problems

There are currently many areas in Animal Crossing: New Horizons which have remained frustratingly unimproved since the game's release in the spring of 2020. These shortcomings include a lack of conversation options with the villagers living on the player's New Horizons island, leading to boring and repetitive daily interactions. However, upcoming slice-of-life simulation games appear to be taking these problems to heart, and Yokai Inn, a Studio Ghibli-inspired simulation title with fantasy elements, may have found the solution for Animal Crossing's problem.

Yokai Inn is a slice-of-life simulation game where players must manage an abandoned inn that comes to life when the sun sets. The title was announced at E3 2021's Wholesome Direct and is currently in early development for PC and Mobile devices. Yokai Inn includes many mechanics popular in the simulation genre, like foraging, mining, cooking, and creating relationships with the spiritual creatures that call the inn home. The game also sports an adorable pixelated art style that will be receiving big changes in the near future to create a unique and immersive experience.

Fans of Animal Crossing: New Horizons' social aspects may be interested in Yokai Inn, as the new indie game intends to introduce a fulfilling social mechanic. According to the Yokai Inn official page, Yokai Inn will include "dynamic dialogue", allowing interactions with NPCs to remain fresh and different with every new conversation. This will be a big change from games like New Horizons, which bases character interactions predominantly on the stereotypical personality types of each Animal Crossing villager.

Despite Animal Crossing: New Horizons gameplay focusing predominantly on the interactions players have with their villager community members, Nintendo has announced no plans to introduce more engaging dialogue options or social mechanics to improve the current system. Because of this, island inhabitants are often chosen based on aesthetics, instead of a desire for a meaningful relationship in-game, and Animal Crossing villagers have come to be seen as collectible items, instead of characters to run a town alongside of. Hopefully, Yokai Inn's plans for immersive character interactions will create a more meaningful experience for players as they rebuild and run their inn, and allow players to emotionally connect with the characters through their own personalities and backstories.

Currently, it isn't known if Yokai Inn gameplay will implement romance mechanics or friendship levels with certain NPCs. These are popular options in many simulation games, and would likely be well received by fans of the genre. Hopefully, more information regarding social interactions will be released in the near future. In the meantime, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players who are ready for deeper character interactions will have to sit tight and wait for further updates.
