The Guardians of the Galaxy Are Earth's Least Popular Heroes

Warning: contains major spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #15!

Despite saving Earth and the galaxy numerous times, the Guardians of the Galaxy remain one of the most unknown hero teams on Earth. Guardians of the Galaxy #15 reveals a sad truth: it hasn't mattered who the superhero space team has defeated or where their heroes come from. Earth may know all about the Avengers, but this team isn't on their radar at all.

The current Guardians of the Galaxy roster includes Nova, Gamora, Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket, Quasar (Phyla-Vell, Avril Kincaid, and Wendell Vaughn), Groot, Super-Skrull, Moon Dragon, Marvel Boy, and Hercules, among others. The heroes come from all across the galaxy, but many have Earth connections. Currently, they're keeping an eye on Ego, the Living Planet. Ego has been covered up with a black exterior, hiding any clues about what may be occurring underneath. Meanwhile, Star-Lord and Nova are off on a separate, diplomatic mission.

Created by the team of Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and Vc Cory Petit, Guardians of the Galaxy #15 sees Star-Lord and Nova on S.W.O.R.D.'s space station as ambassadors. The two are greeted by Abigail Brand and Magneto - which immediately puts Nova on the offensive and causes a fight to break out between him and Magneto. Afterwards, the two talk and Nova is surprised to find that Magneto actually knows about the Guardians of the Galaxy, since many Earthers don't.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have taken on threats like Thanos, the Phalanx, and even helped fight during a previous Annihilation. While they fight intergalactic threats that normal Earth people couldn't possibly have heard of, they've also been part of major superhero efforts to save the Earth. Yet they are getting no recognition for it. This is particularly interesting since many members are Earthlings or individuals who grew up on Earth, like in Star-Lord's case. Marvel Boy crash-landed on Earth and after a rough start, joined the Young Avengers. Richard Rider, the current Nova, was born in New York and was given the powers of Nova. Hercules is one of Earth's oldest and most legendary warriors and even his inclusion on the team hasn't meant much for their popularity. While these heroes have Earth-specific histories, their contributions to the planet's safety go largely unknown.

This is especially interesting since, as Magneto points out, they're basically the Avengers of Space. The Avengers are one of the most well-known teams on Earth, as are the X-Men. The Avengers have worked with the Guardians many times and even this association hasn't bolstered the team's notoriety. The Guardians have also fought alongside some of the X-Men, but they're entering into a larger partnership. While some of Earth's inhabitants may do their best to avoid information about mutants, their new home and global partnerships are hard to ignore - especially with an event as highly publicized as the Hellfire Gala occurring. The citizens of Earth are familiar with the heroes operating around them daily, but less so with heroes who have taken their heroic efforts off-world. However, partnerships with more prevalent teams, recruiting an infamous supervillain like Doctor Doom, and perhaps the next growing cosmic threat, may lead to the Guardians of the Galaxy gaining more of a following. Currently, despite all their hard work and sacrifices, they're the least popular superhero team on Earth.
