Star Wars: Why Sung Kang Is So Excited to Work on the Obi-Wan Show

Sung Kang, who was confirmed to be starring in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series back in March, isn't shy about sharing his excitement for the role. The show, which began filming back in April, sees Ewan McGregor returning in the titular role as the fan favorite Jedi Master. In addition to Kang, whose character has not yet been revealed, Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as the notorious Darth Vader, alongside other names like Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse.

It's been a big year for the 49-year-old actor. Kang is best known for playing Han Lue in the Fast & Furious franchise, and recently, reprised his role as Han in the hugely successful F9Additionally, he lent his voice for the role of Dang Hai in Disney's animated feature, Raya and the Last Dragon, and starred in Evan Jackson Leong's Snakehead. Kang also made his Apple TV+ debut in Lisey's Storythe adaptation of Stephen King's 2006 novel, as Officer Dan Boeckman.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Kang opened up about his nostalgia for Star Wars and his excitement for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. A lifelong fan of the franchise, Kang said he had to "pinch himself" while being on set and getting in costume. Kang's full quote can be read below:

“The feeling that I get on set is every single crew member, you look in their eyes, and it’s like a kid going ‘I grew up watching Star Wars. Like, this is my dream to be here, to see one of the Star Wars characters, or the Darth Vader character or, you know, one of the Jedis walking around. No matter how old they are, it’s guys that do my makeup and stuff, and people who do the costumes, and all the set designers. There’s this feeling of legacy and it’s like everyone talks about history and why they feel so blessed to be here. there’s this history, there’s this kind of shared spirit and this passion of the connective tissue is all these Star Wars characters.”

Disney+ certainly hasn't been dropping Star Wars shows at Marvel's rate. However, fans have seen some new content from the streaming service, such as The Mandalorian season 2, Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7, and the debut of Star Wars: The Bad Batch. These shows were met with praise from both viewers and critics, leaving fans of the Star Wars universe hungry for more. While the exact release date of The Mandalorian season 3 remains somewhat unclear, Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett is set to arrive on Disney+ in December 2021, in addition to Star Wars: Visions, a 10-episode animated anthology series.

Coming fresh off his F9 run, and with an exciting role in the upcoming Star Wars series, 2021 seems to be Kang's year. The actor even teased his mystery character's sexual deliciousness in an interview last month, further amping up the excitement for his role in the show. Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently in production, and the series is expected to release on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
