Ryan Reynolds hilariously reveals what fuels his feud with fellow actor Hugh Jackman. The ongoing battle between Reynolds and Jackman has provided endless entertainment for fans, with the two actors frequently poking fun at each other with every chance they get. It all began when the two met on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. At the time, Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson, and Jackman, a friend of Johansson's, playfully joked about how Reynolds needed to be on his best behavior. Over the years, the jokes have escalated and even wiggled their way into Reynolds' Deadpool movies.
Most recently, Jackman took a shot at Reynolds' latest appearance as Marvel's Merc with a Mouth. To help promote his new film Free Guy, Reynolds suited up as Deadpool again and released a video wherein he reacted to the movie's trailer alongside the MCU's Korg. Jackman commented on the video and joked about how Deadpool managed to resist mentioning him; when breaking the fourth wall in his movies, Deadpool has frequently called out Jackman and his time playing Wolverine in the X-Men films.
Reynolds recently appeared on the SmartLess podcast and talked to hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. Naturally, conversation eventually turned to Reynolds' war with Jackman, and Bateman couldn't resist asking how it began. Reynolds' answer (via CinemaBlend) might surprise fans, as he says it all comes down to Jackman's unflinching kindness:
You know Hugh Jackman is...I really shouldn’t say this, but he... he makes kindness look like murder. I mean he really is just the nicest guy you’d ever meet. And it drives me nuts sometimes... He really is the real deal.
I wanna understand that to some degree, so we sometimes hate and lash out at the things we cannot understand. So I tend to hate and lash out at Hugh, and he reciprocates of course because he’s nothing if not a sportsman. And that’s kind of it. But in reality, he’s like my life sherpa. He’s one of the best guys I know.
Jackman does have a reputation for being a genuinely good person, and it's funny to consider that his feud with Reynolds is just the Free Guy actor lashing out in the face of constant kindness. At the same time, the knowledge that there's real affection lingering under all the relentless jokes just makes everything better. The two have been known to put aside their so-called animosity when the situation calls for it, as both Jackman and Reynolds raised money for charity last year amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Seeing as the last time the two properly shared the big screen together was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it's about time the two act together again. Fans might hope that Jackman will put in another appearance as Wolverine, perhaps in Deadpool 3, but the actor so far remains steadfast in his decision to walk away from the role. That, of course, is assuming his recent Wolverine-related posts don't have any connection to a potential new part. Fans might have to wait a bit longer to see Jackman and Reynolds together again, though there will likely be plenty more jokes before then.
