Microsoft Flight Simulator Will Add Helicopters In 2022

Microsoft Flight Simulator will be adding helicopters to the game sometime in 2022. The latest iteration of the long-running flight simulator series was released almost a year ago in August 2020 and developer Asobo has since been releasing more content and features for the game. Surprisingly though, the studio has yet to introduce helicopters as one of the available aircraft in the game, with people having to add the vehicle themselves through a mod that lets players pilot an Airbus H135.

Despite its popularity, Microsoft Flight Simulator has always been a PC exclusive title. But with this latest edition of the game, Asobo and Microsoft are finally bringing the flight simulator series to consoles with a scheduled release on the Xbox Series X/S on July 27, 2021. Porting Microsoft Flight Simulator to console is definitely a challenging task given the limitations of the Xbox Series X/S controller versus a mouse and keyboard or a flight simulator rig on PC, but the studio is implementing new features for console to make the experience much more accessible.

Asobo recently shared its latest development update, which includes the studio’s development roadmap for the game from June to September 2021. Asobo also shared some of the most requested features from the community. There are almost 50 items listed in the standard list and over 20 in the VR feature requests, with helicopters taking the top spot overall with over 1,500 votes. The list shows helicopters as a planned feature for a release in 2022, confirming that the studio is definitely working on bringing helicopters to Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Some of the other features in the list have been listed either started, planned, under investigation, or simply not started, but the number of items that Asobo is either looking at or working on shows just how much the studio listens to the feedback of its community. Last May, Asobo was able to cut the install size for Microsoft Flight Simulator to almost half as the game was beginning to take quite a significant amount of drive space thanks to all the new content that has been released for the game since it was released.

While players may have to wait a bit more to officially be able to fly helicopters in the game, it’s definitely good news to see that Asobo is finally planning on adding the feature to Microsoft Flight Simulator. In the meantime, players will definitely have a lot of other new content and features to experience in-game as the studio still regularly releases updates – with the latest one being the addition of the Nordic countries.
