Indiana Jones 5 director James Mangold debunks rumors filming had been shut down. After enduring numerous setbacks, including multiple script rewrites and a director change, Indiana Jones 5 finally began production in June. Unfortunately, shortly after cameras started rolling, the film encountered another issue. Star Harrison Ford injured his shoulder rehearsing a fight scene, forcing the creative team to adjust the shooting schedule while the actor recovers.
The severity of Ford's injury was unknown at the time of the initial report, but there were unsubstantiated rumors suggesting it was very serious and would require surgery. Some believed Ford would be out of commission for several months, and that production was being completely shut down for the time being. Thankfully, things don't appear to be that dire on the Indiana Jones 5 set, as the movie's director has cleared things up.
On Twitter, Mangold responded to a user who was seemingly expressing concern over the recent Indiana Jones 5 rumors and suggested the director work on refining the Indiana Jones 5 screenplay in the interim. Since first being announced in 2016, Indiana Jones 5 has struggled mightily to get off the ground. Now that the film had finally gotten back on track in recent months, the last thing it needed was another prolonged delay. Mangold's comments aren't the most surprising development. At the time of Ford's injury, Disney's official statement said filming would continue during the actor's treatment. If production needed to be shut down, the studio would have released something themselves. Still, it's great Mangold was able to clear this matter up, assuring worried viewers he's still working ahead of the film's release date next summer.
While Ford is the star and obviously a massive part of Indiana Jones 5, there are ways Mangold and company can work around the actor's injury. Stunt performers can fill in for Ford to handle certain action sequences, and production can also focus on other principal stars such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen. Plus, depending on the seriousness of Ford's shoulder injury, it's possible Ford could still film scenes that aren't as physically demanding. Ideally, he will make a full recovery in the near future and return to his full shooting schedule. Based on what's been officially said about the matter, Ford's injury may not be too severe. If Lucasfilm felt confident to continue filming, they must feel Ford will be back sooner rather than later.
