GvK Hinted At Kong's Future Intelligence Level In The MonsterVerse

Godzilla vs. Kong hinted at how intelligent Kong has the potential to be in the MonsterVerse. Through the sign language reveal and the use of the ax, the movie made it clear that Kong is more advanced than other Titans, but apparently, he has a lot more room to grow in that area as Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise moves forward.

One of Kong’s most memorable moments in the MonsterVerse came in Godzilla vs. Kong when the movie’s human characters found out that the giant ape has been secretly learning sign language from Jia (Kaylee Hottle). It was a telling scene because it brought Kong even closer to humans and gave him a way of communicating with them. Not only that, but it showed that Kong has an intelligence level that far exceeds most Titans. Kong’s brains were also reflected in the movie’s fight scenes, which demonstrated Kong’s uniqueness to the other Titans in the MonsterVerse. Unlike creatures such as Godzilla, Rodan, and Ghidorah, Kong is a tool-user who understands how to use strategy to win his battles. This was on display when he figured out how to properly use his ax’s energy absorption powers against Godzilla.

The visit to the Hollow Earth temple in Godzilla vs. Kong served as an indication that Kong’s intelligence could reach greater heights in the MonsterVerse’s future. While in the Hollow Earth, the characters uncovered a massive, ancient temple once occupied by Kong’s ancestors. They also found structures, carvings, and Kong statues that looked manmade. One might assume that these things were made by the Hollow Earth humans who lived down there, specifically the ancestors of Jia’s tribe on Skull Island since they previously resided in the Hollow Earth. However, the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization confirms that it was in fact Kong’s species who constructed the temple.

In the book, Ilene expressed doubt about this possibility, but Jia, who remembered stories passed down by her people, was confident that Kong’s ancestors raised the temple themselves and made the statues. A closer look told Ilene that the temple wasn’t an example of “human architecture”, and that Jia must be right. It’s easy to understand Ilene’s initial skepticism, given that Kong hasn’t been shown to be as advanced as those who built the temple. Somehow, members of Kong’s species were so intelligent that they were able to masterfully build an entire temple and statues of their kind.

As pointed out by the book, the ability of Kong’s species to establish a culture and society of their own in the Hollow Earth is evidence of Kong’s species being less like apes and chimpanzees and more like humans. His ancestors possessing these capabilities raises questions about what Kong can achieve in movies set after Godzilla vs. Kong. If he were to explore the hidden Hollow Earth world and find surviving members of his kind, there’s a chance they could restore their lost culture.
