Black Widow's Red Guardian Fights His Replacement In New Preview

Warning! Spoilers for Winter Guard #1 by Marvel Comics below

The Russian government wants to capture the Red Guardian and Yelena Belova in a new Marvel Comics series as the pair will find themselves up against the latest iteration of the Winter Guard. In Winter Guard #1, the Red Guardian will face off against Vanguard, who eventually replaced him on the superteam. The Black Widow hero will be forced to face his past and future in the upcoming four-issue miniseries.

Alexei Shoshtakov is one of the Avengers' oldest frenemies, as the character originally debuted in Avengers #43 more than 50 years ago. Initially, the Red Guardian was the ex-husband to Black Widow, who didn't have any powers but relied on his training and pure strength when fighting some powerful heroes. In Black Widow, David Harbour played a version of the character injected with Russia's version of the super-soldier serum, who was the adopted father of Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova. In more recent continuity Nikolai Krylenko, the Russian super-soldier Vanguard took over the role as Red Guardian on the newly formed Winter Guard. While Vanguard eventually returned to his original name, he still wears a similar costume to Red Guardian.

In a new unlettered preview of Winter Guard #1 by Ryan Cady and Jan Bazaldua, Red Guardian and Yelena Belova will come face-to-face with the new Winter Guard, who are hunting the heroes to help Russia 'clean house.' The new Winter Guard team includes Ursa Major, Crimson Dynamo, Darkstar, Vanguard, Red Widow, and two new Slavic deities. The preview shows Belova fighting the mutant bear Ursa Major (who is back on the team after seemingly being killed), who seems to get the upper hand against her.

Meanwhile, Red Guardian is shocked to run into Vanguard - who wears one of his costumes.

The older Red Guardian battles Vanguard, as the super-soldier uses his shield to take on his former ally. Alexei uses his boomerang to counter his opponent, landing a bloody blow to Vanguard's face when the weapon returns to him.

Red Guardian and Yelena Belova will be in tough to stop Vanguard and the Red Widow-led Winter Guard. In facing the Russian soldier who wears his old costume, Red Guardian will have to deal with what it means to wear the star on his chest and whether that's it's still worth doing - especially after his own country hunts him. Red Guardian and Yelena Belova will take on their fellow Russian soldiers, when Winter Guard #1 arrives in comic book stores on August 25 by Marvel Comics.
