Younger: 5 Reasons Liza Was Right To End Things With Charles (5 It Would Have Worked)

Liza's love triangle with Josh and Charles was one of the central stories of Younger - and for most of the final seasons, it seemed clear that she and Charles were meant to be. The two had a strong relationship, and fans were shocked when Charles' proposal led to a breakup. However, their story wasn't over, as the final season saw them reconnect at the end... only to break up again partway through the finale!

In the end, it seemed that they just couldn't be honest with each other - Liza was keeping Inkubater secrets and Charles wasn't telling her that he already knew, but that wasn't the only reason it couldn't work. Were they right to call it quits, or should the show have ended with these two in love?

10 Could Have Worked: They Are At A Similar Life Stage

While fans loved Liza and Josh, their biggest issue was their age difference - and being at such totally different stages in their lives. Charles and Liza, however, connected over their similar ways of looking at the world, similar life experiences, and the fact that they are both divorcees with children. In so many ways, they are in the same place, and that made him a far better choice than Josh.

9 Right To End It: The Situation With His Ex-Wife

They may have divorce in common, but Charles's ex-wife was definitely going to be an issue for Liza. At first, they worked well together, but when she realized Liza and Charles were dating, things got truly ugly. She was petty, vindictive, and difficult - and even though she then found love and wanted to make it up to Liza, she was still meddling, hiding Charles's passport, gossiping about him, trying to force them back into dating. If Liza stayed with Charles, she would have to deal with this situation permanently, and that is a huge red flag.

8 Could Have Worked: They Share The Same Passions

Liza and Charles connected on more than just their similar ages and life experiences - they share the same passions for literature and the publishing industry. This is a fantastic connection, and one that Liza and Josh definitely didn't have, as he isn't much of a reader. It's easy to imagine Liza and Charles spending their lives together talking books, writing, and work every night.

7 Right To End It: They Work Together

The downside of this mutual passion for publishing is that Liza and Charles work together, and the show proves (over and over) that they can struggle to balance their work relationship and their personal relationship.

Given Charles's position at the company, and Liza's comparatively junior role, this could also create real issues with accusations of favoritism - previously, Charles has simply stepped down to avoid this, but it creates extra complications and potential problems. Simply not dating in the workplace is definitely a simpler situation.

6 Could Have Worked: They Have Clear Chemistry

There is no denying that, whatever their issues, these two have some powerful chemistry and absolutely adore each other. The chemistry is what pulled them together in the first place, even when Charles thought that Liza was significantly younger than she actually is. And while it's not the only thing that matters in a relationship, chemistry is still incredibly important - it may even have been enough to keep them fighting through the issues.

5 Right To End It: They Wanted Different Things

The reason they ended things in the first place is that Charles wanted marriage, and Liza didn't. And while they claimed, in the finale, to have decided that they just wanted to be together, this fundamental difference in how they see relationships and what they want remains. Charles wants a more traditional relationship, and Liza doesn't, and in time, that would likely cause more disharmony and resentment on both sides.

4 Could Have Worked: She Loves His Family

Although Liza didn't necessarily want to go through motherhood again, now that her own daughter is grown up, she clearly loved Charles's children and they adored her, too.

The moment in the final episodes where Charles's daughter finds Liza sneaking out in the morning, and tells her that she's happy she's 'back' makes the end of their relationship even more heartbreaking.

3 Right To End It: They Weren't Honest With Each Other

Even bigger than the issue of Charles and Liza wanting different things in the future is the issue of honesty between them. Even after Liza's big lie was revealed, they continued keeping secrets from one another. When Liza dashed to the airport to give Charles his passport back, she lied about where it was. She didn't tell him she had submitted him to the writer's retreat, and wouldn't have, if he hadn't been accepted. She didn't tell him about Inkubator, and he didn't tell her that he already knew Kelsey was getting other offers. Honesty, especially given how their relationship started, is vital - and they couldn't find a way to tell each other the truth.

2 Could Have Worked: They Support Each Other's Dreams

Without Liza, Charles would not have realized that he wanted to revisit his dreams of writing, and without Charles, there is no way that Liza would have risen so quickly in publishing to fulfill her own dreams. Throughout the series, these two were always looking out for each other, supporting and encouraging each other in their goals, and that's a huge part of what makes a healthy relationship.

1 Right To End It: She's Meant To Be With Josh

This may be a matter of opinion, but at least in the framework of the series, it became clear in the finale that Josh was Liza's endgame. The final scene of the last episode was a callback to the moment that Liza and Josh first met, with the added line that Josh was 'here all along' - clearly setting them up as the perfect pair. And while Liza and Josh have their own issues, from a storytelling perspective (and a romantic one) having her realize that he was right for her all along is her real happily ever after.
