Star Wars: Palpatine Was Secretly Betrayed By His Most Trusted Ally

Warning! Spoilers for Darth Vader #13 by Marvel Comics below.

As Darth Vader recommitted to the dark side and tries to find and kill Luke Skywalker, his master was just betrayed by one of his closest allies. In Darth Vader #13, it's revealed Sly Moore, the aide and Chief of Staff to Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars universe, was actually working against his goals, as she's assembling her own team to ensure neither he nor his apprentice becomes the most powerful beings in the galaxy.

Sly Moore's long been one of Darth Sidious' most trusted allies. The Force-sensitive Umbaran originally appeared in the prequel trilogy advising Palpatine and standing alongside him as he rose to power in the Star Wars galaxy. More than just a stand-in, Sly has long been aware of Palpatine's greatest secrets, including his identity as Darth Sidious as well as his secret contingency plans on Exegol. Moore has had a notable role next to Palpatine across the current 'War of the Bounty Hunters' arc.

In Darth Vader #13 by Greg Pak, Raffaele Ienco, Jason Keith, and VC's Joe Caramanga, Vader travels to Outer Rim with Ochi Bestoon to confront Jabba the Hutt about the location of Han Solo. Revealing Solo's body was stolen from Boba Fett and a number of new bounty hunters are trying to recover him, Hutt tells Vader a group of droids chased down a new lead. Traveling to a droid-run repair center, the Sith Lord encounters IG-88, who possesses the information needed to find Solo. However, when Vader attacks, the powerful droid taps into a connection allowing him to control his opponent's robot body. Paralyzed from the device, Vader can only stand still and wonder who gave him the code necessary to overtake his body. The answer? Sly Moore.

After Vader manages to defeat IG-88, the story flashes to Coruscant where a mysterious voice says the droid failed. The robed figure's face is eventually revealed, as Sly Moore is shown to be the person who gave IG-88 the code to freeze Vader in place. Moore tells IG-88 that Palpatine and his apprentice are extremely dangerous and if those who oppose them band together, they will be "more powerful" than the two Sith.

While Moore's had a presence in the Star Wars universe before the comic, specifically in the prequel trilogy where she can be seen alongside Emperor Palpatine, her backstory has plenty of gaps needing to be filled in. Turning her into a secret force against Palpatine makes the character much more interesting. It's now clear, Emperor Palpatine's inner circle isn't as strong as previously believed. Darth Vader #13 is in stores now.
