Pirates Of The Caribbean: 10 Best Barbossa Quotes, Ranked

Captain Jack Sparrow is, without a doubt, the iconic star of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies. However, over the course of five films, another character returned evolving from a heartless villain to a hero much like Jack; that would be none other than Captain Hector Barbossa played by Geoffrey Rush.

Hector Barbossa was the standout villain of Curse Of The Black Pearl. After that, he became a recurring character in all four sequels until the character's death in Dead Men Tell No Tales. With five films under the character's belt, he's had plenty of memorable lines to steal the show with.

10 "We Named The Monkey Jack."

Much like Bill Nighy as the beloved Davy Jones, Geoffrey Rush brought a lot of charm and humor to his character, especially with his many banters with Jack Sparrow. One of them comes when Jack chases the monkey who carries one of the cursed coins to Barbossa. Barbossa thanks Jack in response.

"You're welcome." Sparrow returns only to be insulted when Barbossa reveals, "Not you. We named the monkey Jack." Jack the monkey would end up being an iconic part of the series for three movies, remaining the last undead part of the crew.

9 “I’m disinclined to acquiesce to your request.”

Probably the most classy way to tell someone, "No." Elizabeth parlays with Barbossa and states that she wants him and his crew to leave and never return. While the crew chuckles, Barbossa responds with a kind, "I’m disinclined to acquiesce to your request." After a slight pause, he concludes with, "Means: no."

Barbossa is a master of seeming gentleman-like while insulting at the same time. It makes it difficult to hate Barbossa, even when he's a villain.

8 "You think you can outrun the world?"

Most remember Jack and Hector's relationship as two always butting heads. Well, At World's End showcased their friendship growing with more tender moments. When the crew discover the carcass of the mighty Kraken, Barbossa has a heart-to-heart talk with Jack,

"Still thinking of running, Jack? You think you can outrun the world?" This combined with the subsequent dialogue between him and Jack shows that the two have changed. They are no longer just pirates and wretches, they are now men of honor who have been given a second chance to do better.

7 "You're Off The Edge Of The Map, Mate."

A good majority of the dialogue for Barbossa in Curse Of The Black Pearl is iconic and perfect for memes and t-shirts. One coming in the epic sword fight between him and Jack Sparrow in the climax. They lock swords, leading to Barbossa taunting him: "You're off the edge of the map, mate. Here there be monsters!"

This line was definitely intended to be remembered as it was featured in promotional material. It was even the name of a level in LEGO Pirates Of The Caribbean. Geoffrey Rush delivers it perfectly with the right amount of cheese and gravitas to make it so iconic.

6 "So what now, Jack Sparrow?"

Also from the climax, Jack and Barbossa are both undead monsters battling each other until Will removes the curse. This leads to a great bit of commentary from Barbossa, "So what now, Jack Sparrow? Are we to be two immortals locked in an epic battle until Judgment Day and trumpets sound? Hmm?"

Even though the idea of two pirate skeletons fighting for all eternity Ã  la Highlander would likely draw audiences, the curse does end. However, this question does warrant a witty, "Or you could surrender" from Jack.

5 "Treasure."

Sadly, Hector Barbossa meets his end in the final battle against Salazar in Dead Men Tell No Tales. After he saves Carina, she notices Barbossa's tattoo of the same star constellation she followed the whole film. She asks him, "Who am I to you?" Barbossa admits the truth, "Treasure."

Carina is Hector's daughter and that line is the perfect representation of a father's love for his daughter. Following this line, Hector sacrifices himself to kill Salazar, allowing him to go out as a true hero in one of the best redemption arcs ever brought to film.

4 "I'm curious; after you kill me, what is it you plan on doing next?"

After Barbossa speaks with Elizabeth Swann in his cabin, she attempts to kill Barbossa by stabbing him through the heart. This is when it's revealed that Barbossa is immortal because he just pulls the knife out. Of course, Barbossa can't let anything slide without some kind of remark.

"I'm curious; after you kill me, what is it you plan on doing next?" Like a true boss of the sea, shrugging off that attack as if it were a mild inconvenience. This leads to Elizabeth scurrying onto the deck to discover that the whole crew consists of the undead.

3 "So tell me, what's become of my ship?"

Jack Sparrow is dead and the heroes need to get him back from Davy Jones locker, setting up At World's End rather well. However, Dead Man's Chest leaves off on one of the best ending stingers when Tia Dalma says they need a captain that knows the locker.

In comes, a newly resurrected Hector Barbossa who enters with a swell of music as he asks, "So tell me, what's become of my ship?" As he bites into a juicy apple just as he wanted in the first film, letting out that perfect pirate laugh that Geoffrey Rush already nailed in Curse Of The Black Pearl. The credits roll and Disney guaranteed everyone would be back to see the third movie.

2 "The code is more what you'd call guidelines than actual rules."

Barbossa strikes a deal with Elizabeth; so Barbossa gets the coin and agrees to leave with his crew but she stays with them. She tries to bring up the pirate's code again, leading to Barbossa pointing out her flaws; proving that Barbossa can talk his way to have the upper hand in nearly any situation.

"First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement so I must do nothing. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the pirate's code to apply and you're not. And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner."

1 "You best start believin' in ghost stories, Ms. Turner."

Of course, Hector Barbossa's most famous line comes when he gives a big speech about what he wants: to be mortal again. Elizabeth was already just scared to death by the skeleton crew but Barbossa slowly steps into the moonlight, showing his skeletal form.

"For too long I've been parched of thirst and unable to quench it. Too long I've been starving to death and haven't died. I feel nothing. Not the wind on my face nor the spray of the sea. Nor the warmth of a woman's flesh. You best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner... you're in one!" It helps that the CGI still holds up remarkably well but combined with the reveal, Geoffrey Rush's delivery, and the music: this will always be Hector Barbossa's signature moment in the franchise.
