Almost fourteen years after the original release of its predecessor, NEO: The World Ends With You aims to serve as a sequel to the cult classic Square Enix RPG. Globally released in 2008 for the Nintendo DS, The World Ends With You (TWEWY) featured a unique style of action gameplay coupled with a deep story that lead to it being widely considered one of the most underrated RPGs in recent years. As the release date for its upcoming sequel draws closer, Square Enix has been releasing more information regarding NEO: TWEWY, including the reveal of one of its game modes, Scramble Slam. Nintendo fans, however, were quick to notice that it bears striking similarities to Splatoon.
Splatoon is a third person shooter, initially released in 2015. The game was successful enough to warrant a sequel in 2017 on the Nintendo Switch, and in early 2021 Nintendo announced development plans for a third game, Splatoon 3, currently set to release in 2022. Splatoon is primarily based around territory control, and features two teams of players engaging in combat for control over an arena.
It seems that Scramble Slam will be a minigame within NEO: TWEWY, something that was also featured in the original release of The World Ends With You in the form of Tin Pin Slammer. However, the turf war style of gameplay shown in Scramble Slam is something new to the series. Although little information has been revealed about it thus far - something that will likely change as the game's July release date draws closer - the strong similarities to Splatoon are worth noting.
In a post on Square Enix's official Twitter account, Scramble Slam was described as a "city-wide turf war", one that will involve competing teams engaging in battles across various locations within the city. In order to claim an area, players will either have to erase a significant amount of orange Turf Noise or eliminate rival team members within that specific area of town. To many fans, especially players who are also familiar with Nintendo's Splatoon, this style of gameplay sounded highly familiar - though it's worth noting that Splatoon 2 actually included multiple battle modes rather than just one strict form of playstyle.
Splatoon also features two rival teams duking it out for control over an area. Each team paints with a different color, and in order to achieve victory one team must have significantly more of their color on the map than the other team. Players can also eliminate rival team members by targeting them with a wide array of different Splatoon weapons. While NEO: The World Ends With You may not feature playable squids, its connection to Splatoon seems very apparent in the gameplay of Scramble Slam. However, players might be surprised by the differences that could be revealed as the game gets closer to release.
