The film adaptation of the beloved stage musical Matilda will be released by Netflix in December 2022. Matilda is considered one of the best children’s novels of all time, and the titular Matilda is among Roald Dahl’s most popular characters—a child genius with the power of telekinesis who is underappreciated by her family and the tyrannical Miss Trunchbull. The story is probably best known for being adapted into the 1996 family film Matilda, directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson. However, a stage musical adaptation of the story has also enjoyed great success on both the West End and Broadway over the last decade. The movie version of the musical is already boasting an all-star cast: Emma Thompson will be playing Trunchbull, and Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch is set to play Miss Honey, Matilda’s kind teacher. Newcomer Alisha Weir will be taking on the titular role of Matilda.
Per TheWrap, the film adaptation of the Matilda musical helmed by the stage production’s original creative team will be coming to Netflix next year. The musical will be available for the whole world to enjoy in December 2022 after a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland on December 2.
Many people love DeVito’s take on the classic children’s novel, so the movie musical version of Matilda has some big shoes to fill. That being said, the stage production has enjoyed so much success since its debut in 2010, it’s sure to translate well onto the screen. Everyone will be able to enjoy a brand-new reimagining of Matilda when it hits Netflix next year.
