Fans of Mario sports spinoffs and golf fans alike are in for a treat with Mario Golf: Super Rush. The latest installment of the series includes 16 playable characters to play as, with more coming for free in the future. One of the standout features of this game is the exciting speed golf mode, which is anything but laid back.
Instead of waiting for each golfer to take their turn, speed golf participants all play at the same time. In this chaotic yet refreshing take on the well-known sport, players will aim and swing in real-time against their opponents and sprint to their ball for the next shot or put. While getting the ball in first will yield the most points, the number of swings it takes to complete the round will also influence the player’s overall score. Here are some tips to get started and win rounds in this fast-paced game mode.
Know One’s Character
- There’s more to choosing a golfer in Super Rush than picking one’s favorite character. They each have varied stats, with some being able to run faster to their next swing while others have more power to make their balls go farther. In addition, every playable character has their own unique special shot they can trigger to shake up their game, as well as a special dash they can utilize to interfere or out speed the competition while running to their next shot. Try experimenting with every character and pick out a few ‘mains’ to specialize in, then familiarize oneself with their strengths and weaknesses.
Time Special Dashes Carefully
- As stated, each character has their own special dash they can activate to pull further ahead in the course. Using it will lower their stamina gauge by a considerable amount, but will increase their speed and bring them closer to their ball. However, these special dashes can knock into other players and stun them temporarily. This will be happening a lot at the start of each course, where all the golfers start in the same area. Players will become separated as the match progresses, but they still cross paths at times. Knowing this, spatial awareness of the other participants should be known at all times. That way, when they come close, the player will have an opportune time to let their special dash loose against them. Otherwise, if nobody is around, special dashes should be used as frequently as possible for their speed boosts. Also, knowing where the other characters are is important because it will allow players more time to get out of the way if their opponents are using a special dash.
Prioritize the Ball
- Griefing other players with special dashes is part of the fun in speed golf, but the top priority should be getting the ball in the hole before the others have a chance to. Of course, if the player needs to pass by any opponents on the way to their next shot, disrupt them as much as possible. Keep in mind though, that nothing can be done to others while they’re lining up their shot, so don’t waste time trying to interfere with them; the round can go by quickly, so every second counts!
Know When to Use Special Shots
- Just like with the special dashes, the special shots give powerful properties to the golf ball while it flies to it’s destination. What these effects are vary by characters, with Luigi creating a field of ice around where his ball lands, Toad’s enlarged ball knocking away other characters, among other powers. Using them at the right moment can change the course of the game, but because the special gauge needs to be filled in order to use a special shot, using them the moment they’re ready is suboptimal. Instead, wait for an opportunity to arise where the other players, and their balls, will get caught up in the impact of the special shot. It’s a great tool to catch up to the competition, so it might be best to save it for when it’s needed most!
