Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters Will Release In Order Starting In July

Remakes of the original six Final Fantasy games will be released, starting in July. The games will be part of the Pixel Remaster series, featuring remade pixel art of all the characters. The games will be released sequentially, starting with Final Fantasy I.

The Final Fantasy series began in 1987 with Final Fantasy I. That first title would go on to spawn one of the most beloved video game franchises of all time. The series is now on its 15th mainline title, with a 16th on the horizon. While the original NES and SNES titles do have their flaws, fans still cherish them for their revolutionary graphics, gameplay, and sound design.

Now, fans will be getting another chance to revisit those original titles with the Pixel Remaster series, starting in July (via Gematsu). The information was released via a now-removed presentation posted by Square Enix. The 30-minute long presentation went into some detail on the development of the remasters. All the pixel character art has been redone by Kazuko Shibuya. Shibuya has worked on the series from the very beginning, making her the perfect pick for the project.

The video was hosted by Kenichi Maeyamada and Chiaki Matsuzawa. The pair spoke with composer Nobuo Uematsu, Square Enix rep Yoshinori Kitase and series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Behind-the-scenes stories of the games' development were shared, along with a few previews of what fans could expect. The presentation ended with an expanded version of the trailer shown at E3 (seen above). The games will be available on Steam, iOS, and Android, and will be released in numerical order.

The Pixel Remaster editions of the games may end up being the definitive way to experience older Final Fantasy titles. While all editions have been ported to numerous systems over the years, they've rarely received any updates or changes from the original releases. However, not much is known about what changes have been made - if any. Obviously, the pixel art is brand new. But that is the only aspect of the games confirmed to be changing.

Still, the Pixel Remaster titles will give newer fans a chance to experience the original games in their purest form, with a few modern conveniences in mind. They will also be far more accessible, being available on multiple platforms. While primitive compared to more recent entries, the original six Final Fantasy titles hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Revisiting the quests of yesteryear has never looked better.
