The Fast & Furious movies have largely been designed in such a way that they can be enjoyed on a standalone basis. However, F9 has not only carried forward elements from The Fate of the Furious but also left out many plot elements to be continued in the follow-up movie.
F9 had Dominic Toretto learn that his estranged brother Jakob kept Dom’s enemy Cipher captive and was in search of the Aries device. By the end of the movie, Jakob and Dom had reconciled but the characters still have a number of issues they will tackle in the future. In order to be prepared for Fast 10, fans should be up to speed with all the setups.
10 Jakob's Exploits On The Run
It wouldn't be a shock if Jakob is the next character to receive a Fast & Furious spin-off after Hobbs & Shaw, as there’s a lot more of his story to follow. However, it’s likely he will appear in Fast 10 to show his life on the run as F9 ended with his fleeing after his reconciliation with Dom.
Moreover, there’s the matter of him seeking revenge on Cipher, who had Jakob’s men turn on him. With this in mind, there’s enough reason to believe that Jakob will be making a return to clear his name and gain vengeance on Cipher.
9 Han's & Shaw's Inevitable Face-Off
Fans have been waiting for a match-up between Han and Shaw for a long time - as far back as 2006’s Tokyo Drift. Shaw destroyed Han’s car in that movie in an attempt to kill him, but the reveal of Han’s survival has now set up the confrontation audiences have been demanding.
With Shaw becoming a good guy in The Fate of the Furious, it will be interesting to see how he and Han can co-exist in the next movie. The Fast & Furious franchise’s shared universe means the two characters will be meeting at some point and Fast 10 is where it’s leading up to.
8 Cipher's Survival To Return In The Future
Cipher is the overarching antagonist of the Fast & Furious series, with the reveal that she had orchestrated events as far back as Fast & Furious 6. F9 showed Cipher escaping Jakob’s confinement of her to try and take out Dom, only to be thwarted again.
However, now that there’s no one else other than Dom in Cipher’s way, the story is set up for her to return for her grand bid for revenge in Fast 10. Vengeance is the only motive Cipher has now, meaning the next movie is placed for her to plan out her attack against Dom and his crew.
7 The Presence Of Other Weapons Like Aries
Just about every movie starting from Fast & Furious 6 has had a MacGuffin that the villains have been after, with F9 bringing in the Aries device that could hack into any computer system and grant an individual access to the weapons of the world. It’s also confirmed that there are more devices like that out there.
Cipher is the biggest cyberterrorist there is, and there's no way she won’t be pushing to use weapons like the Nightshade device and God’s Eye as she did before. With Cipher set for taking revenge against Dom, the latest weapon will purely be used for vengeance purposes in Fast 10.
6 Sean And His Crew's Experimentation With Vehicles
F9 brought Sean and his friends back from the original Fast & Furious series to the reboot in order to provide Tej and Roman the rocket needed for their car to go into space. This essentially turned them into the new "go-to guys" for Dom’s crew, and there’s little reason to believe they won’t be in Fast 10 in a similar role.
Sean’s reunion with Han in F9’s ending also points toward the resumption of their partnership from Tokyo Drift, placing Sean and his friends as part of Dom’s extended family. This should see the crew coming up with even crazier experiments by the next movie that the heroes will make use of.
5 Ramsey's Continued Development Into A Fighter & Driver
F9 gave Ramsey her most significant arc yet by developing her into an action-oriented character. This time around, she took a direct hand in the story by overcoming her fear of driving and guiding Dom and the rest of the crew while behind the wheel.
Fast 10 is now set up for Ramsey to fully develop in this aspect, even venturing into a fighting role. With Mia and Letty contributing to the action in F9, the next movie should set the stage for Ramsey to join them as a fighter and most likely transition into the female-led Fast & Furious spin-off.
4 Clues To Mr. Nobody's Status
Jakob was revealed as Mr. Nobody’s rogue agent, with the latter disappearing after Jakob’s betrayal. However, F9 gave enough clues to Mr. Nobody’s status alluding to his survival, as he was never found dead and had a big role to play to Han’s survival, as seen in flashbacks.
Fast 10 should continue toward the path to finding Mr. Nobody, especially since Jakob won’t be a threat anymore. The fact that he was confirmed to be something of a magician in F9 is another indication that he orchestrated events in the movie to return in the next.
3 Tej And Roman Befriending Astronauts
No adventure in the Fast & Furious series goes without being acknowledged in the future, and the explanation behind Tej and Roman’s return from space in F9 should be expanded in Fast 10. Roman did throw a funny quote at the end of the movie about being picked up by astronauts, and fans want to see more of this relationship.
Tej also confirmed that the two had spent some time in space before they were returned to Earth, so there’s ample evidence that the duo formed alliances with the crew they came across in space and it’s within the realm of possibility that these off-screen characters will show up in Fast 10.
2 Han's Role As A Father
Han’s absence for this long was explained as him going into hiding to protect his adoptive daughter, Elle, who was the key to unlocking Aries. Prior to F9, Han was never seen in the role of a guardian and this movie also only showed this in flashbacks as opposed to real-time.
With Han now back with the family, the next movie will definitely feature him fully in the role of a father now that he has a purpose in life. Elle is still under threat should Cipher resurface, which gives Han the motivation to remain in action to defend her.
1 The Complete Reunion Of The Toretto Family Remaining
Jakob spent the entirety of F9 estranged from Dom and Mia, not even having a conversation with the latter for the majority of the movie. His last scene showed him reconciling with both, but this was cut short due to Jakob having to go on the run.
This leaves the full reunion of the Toretto family to be shown in Fast 10, as Jakob still hasn’t been part of the family dinner that has become a tradition in Fast & Furious film endings. The prospect of a reunion also gives Dom, Jakob, and Mia reason to seek each other out and be a real family once again.
