Drag Race: Widow Von'Du Speaks Out After Domestic Violence Arrest

Trigger Warning! This article contains reports of alleged domestic abuse.

After being arrested for domestic violence allegations against her boyfriend, RuPaul's Drag Race star Widow Von'Du is claiming that this was an act of self-defense. The fandom got to know Widow during Drag Race season 12. She was off to a very hot start, delivering a verse to "I'm That B*tch" that impressed even guest judge Nicki Minaj. Widow landed in the top two during that episode, and won that first Lip Sync For Your Legacy against Gigi Goode.

Outside of the world of drag, Widow Von'Du goes by Ray Fry. Over the last few years, Ray has struggled to deal with certain RuPaul's Drag Race fans who relentlessly attacked and harassed his work as Widow Von'Du via social media. In September 2020, Ray revealed that he had gotten very close to quitting drag due to this online behavior that he experiences from some fans that might not appreciate his work as a drag performer. Now, Ray is dealing with a new issue in his personal life.

This week, Ray Fry - a.k.a. Widow Von'Du from RuPaul's Drag Race - was arrested for allegations of domestic violence against his boyfriend. As reported by TMZ, Ray "was arrested and booked Monday for domestic violence on a warrant out in Jackson County, MO." The affidavit examined by TMZ describes the situation as Ray arriving home on Friday morning in an allegedly intoxicated state and getting angry with his boyfriend being there asleep. The report then claims that Ray "proceeded to punch his [boyfriend's] face 4 to 5 times, strangle him, drag him across the floor and eventually push him into a bed frame." Ray was taken into custody on Monday for a 24-hour hold, with a bail set at $50,000. He is now facing first- and second-degree domestic assault charges.

However, as seen in the video shared by @cyndollx on Twitter (included above), Ray Fry was seemingly arrested while in drag as his Widow Von'Du persona, and he had a few things to say in his defense. "They are taking me down because I was assaulted in my apartment as someone else would not understand that his privilege does not extend to my apartment," Ray started. When a person asked him to explain himself further, Ray added: "As a Black man in this city, I am being arrested for defending myself in my apartment. And just because his *ss got beat up because he would not leave when I asked five times, I'm being arrested." The video then concluded with Ray saying, "So what I want everyone to see is that I am being arrested right now for defending myself in my apartment instead of someone being arrested for violating me."

This matter will now be dealt with by local authorities and each party's respective legal teams. More updates should follow as this story develops.
