Versatility is one of the most impressive things in a talented actor. They're the stars who can shine in multiple roles whether it be something dramatic, a terrifying horror project, a hilarious comedy, or anything in between. This has happened often in movies but also with roles on television.
Several incredible actors have managed to deliver such fantastic performances on multiple TV shows that they were awarded for their efforts. They took home victories at the Emmy Awards for more than one role on the small screen. It could be for a lead, supporting, or guest role but they all won trophies across different series.
10 James Spader
These days, James Spader is most known for his role as Raymond Reddington on The Blacklist, which earned him two Golden Globe nominations. He also voiced the villainous Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron and played Dunder-Mifflin boss Robert California on The Office.
That being said, Spader's wins at the Emmy Awards came from earlier in his career. First, he took home an Outstanding Lead Actor trophy as Alan Shore in The Practice. Interestingly, he went on to win two more awards for the same character in the Boston Legal spin-off.
9 Bill Hader
Bill Hader is another talented veteran actor who has been nominated for plenty of awards throughout his career but the only ones that he has taken home are Emmys. His most memorable wins are the two he got for Lead Actor on Barry, a show he also helped create.
He has several nominations for Saturday Night Live and Documentary Now! but his first win dates way back before any of those. In 2009, he got a win as co-producer and creative consultant when South Park was named the Outstanding Animated Series.
8 Tony Shalhoub
As soon as anyone sees Tony Shalhoub, their mind typically goes to Monk and with good reason. For nearly a decade, Shalhoub starred as the title character, Adrian Monk, and he racked up the awards, winning three Lead Actor Emmys and being nominated for five others.
Years after Monk ended, Shalhoub moved on to nab a supporting part on the Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Like his castmates Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein, Shalhoub won an Emmy for his part as Abraham Weissman.
7 Uzo Aduba
Most of the actors on this list have been performing for several decades. That makes what Uzo Aduba has accomplished all the more impressive since she only began acting in the 2010s. Her most prominent part is as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren on Orange is the New Black.
For her tenure on the show, Aduba won both a Guest and a Supporting Actress Emmy Award. It helped launch her career and land her many other roles. One of them was in a limited series titled Mrs. America, earning her another Supporting Actress win.
6 Allison Janney
Honestly, it seems like Allison Janney has won a little bit of everything throughout her illustrious career. That includes a recent Academy Award for her turn in I, Tonya. However, television is where she has arguably shined brightest, winning Emmys for three shows.
First, there were four victories for her work as C.J. Cregg in The West Wing, both as a supporting and lead actress. She also won a Guest Actress award for her appearance on Masters of Sex. To top it off, Janney nabbed two Supporting Actress wins as Bonnie Plunkett in Mom.
5 Julianna Margulies
Some of television's most iconic characters have been portrayed by Julianna Margulies. The first saw her as one of the main characters on ER, which she was on for six seasons. During that time, she played Carol Hathaway and was nominated each season, winning once.
A decade after leaving ER, Margulies started getting Lead Actress nominations for her incredible work in The Good Wife. As Alicia Florrick, Margulies won two of the four Emmys that she was up for, while also taking home trophies at other award shows.
4 Betty White
Considering Betty White has been wowing audiences for so long, one might expect to find that she won Emmys for almost countless shows. Of course, White does has an incredible 21 nominations across 10 different series and that's not including Daytime nods.
White got her first win in 1975 as a supporting actress on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. White added a Lead Actress win for The Golden Girls and then nabbed two Guest Actress victories for The John Larroquette Show and as a host of Saturday Night Live in 2010.
3 Sterling K. Brown
Along with Uzo Aduba, Sterling K. Brown is the most recent entry on this list. Brown has been around since the early 2000s but finally had his breakout thanks to The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story where he played real life attorney Christopher Darden.
He snagged a Supporting Actor win for his work on that series. A year later, Brown added to his resume with a Lead Actor win as Randall Pearson on This is Us. He has been nominated for that role three more times as well as for work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
2 Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of the most decorated actors in Emmy history. The comedic star has been taking home trophies since the early '90s. In fact, Louis-Dreyfus has a record for most wins as a single character and is tied for the most acting victories in total.
It started for Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes on Seinfeld, where she won Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1996. She added a Lead Actress win in 2006 for The New Adventures of Old Christine. The true hit came in Veep, where she won six straight years as Lead Actress and scored some awards as producer when it won for Outstanding Comedy Series.
1 John Lithgow
There aren't many actors out there with a longer and more impressive career than John Lithgow. It's also almost impossible to list off all of his accolades, which include a whopping six Emmy Awards. That includes victories spanning four different television shows.
First, Lithgow won for Guest Actor for Amazing Stories: The Doll in 1986. He then scored three Lead Actor wins for his turn as Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lithgow added another Guest Actor win as Arthur Mitchell on Dexter and a Supporting Actor win as Winston Churchill on The Crown.
