Venom 2 Trailer References Raimi's Spider-Man Movies (Are They Connected?)

The trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage contains an Easter egg to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films, although it doesn't mean they're connected. The precise relationship between Sony's Spider-Man spinoff movies and the MCU has been a matter of contentious debate, ever since - back in 2017 - Sony's Amy Pascal claimed the spinoffs were "adjuncts" to the MCU. That led to weeks of back-and-forth between Marvel and Sony, with viewers ultimately left none the clearer.

Whatever that precise relationship may be, Venom 2 director Andy Serkis has recently clarified Venom's characters don't know about Spider-Man. "We're treating this very much as it's his own world," he explained, finally clearing things up a little. "[Venom and his supporting cast] are unaware, at this point, of other characters like Spider-Man." There's no way someone could be unaware of Spider-Man in the MCU, given his participation in the final battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, so it looks as though the spinoffs probably are indeed in a different timeline. Still, notice Serkis doesn't actually say there isn't a Spider-Man in this universe, which fits with the trailer and set photos from Morbius.

Venom may be unaware of Spider-Man, but it looks as though there are going to be several Easter eggs to the wall-crawler. One of the more amusing can be seen when a character named Detective Mulligan flicks through a copy of the Daily Bugle, whose front page is dedicated to "The Hidden Victims of Cletus Kasady." If you look at the banner of the Daily Bugle, you'll see it's exactly the same one used in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.

This doesn't mean Venom and the other Spider-Man spinoffs are set in the same world as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, of course. That trilogy had its own version of Venom, with Topher Grace playing the part of Eddie Brock, and its story was a lot more faithful to Venom's origins in the comics. No, in truth this is simply an amusing Easter egg - although it's a little more significant than many viewers may seem.

This Daily Bugle masthead essentially serves as narrative shorthand, telling viewers that Venom 2 takes places in a world where something like the Raimi trilogy's Daily Bugle exists. It can be assumed it's an important, celebrated newspaper in New York, probably led by a bad-tempered, cigar-chomping J. Jonah Jameson, and that it's likely opposed to vigilantes like Spider-Man and Venom. The Easter egg doesn't imply narrative continuity, but it is surely intended to imply thematic and conceptual similarities. It's a smart approach to world-building, in that such a subtle detail actually suggests quite a lot about the world of Venom 2.
