Shadow & Bone: All Of Morozova’s Creatures & Amplifiers Explained

Warning: SPOILERS for Netflix's Shadow and Bone season 1 and the books ahead.

In Netflix's Shadow and Bone, the Morozova's mythical creatures and their amplifiers is an important part of the plot; here they are explained. In the series, newly-discovered Sun Summoner Alina Starkov is under pressure to harness and control her one-of-a-kind powers to destroy the Shadow Fold. The Fold is a sea of inky darkness filled with monsters that splits the kingdom of Ravka in two and cuts off the capital city and most of the country from the shipment and supplies-bringing port cities to the west. As a result, Ravka is slowly dying.

As powerful as Alina is and could be, however, she's not yet quite powerful enough to completely destroy the Fold on her own.  She needs all the help she can get to increase her powers. To that end, General Kirigan, a.k.a. the Darkling, sets his men on a quest to find three particular amplifiers, accessories created from the bones, teeth, feathers, and claws of special animals that increase a Grisha's power. The Grisha chooses the amplifier but the amplifier also chooses the Grisha; only the Grisha who kills the animal can harness its power. Even normal amplifiers are relatively rare, and only extremely skilled Grisha have them.

However, the three amplifiers the Darkling seeks are so legendary they're considered nothing more than a myth. They were created centuries ago by Ilya Morozova, one of the first Grisha and one of the most powerful to ever have walked the Earth. As a Fabrikator of immense skill, he also earned the title of The Bonesmith thanks to his act of taking his own finger bones and using them to create three mystical animals, amplifiers that are said to give a Grisha power beyond reckoning. No one has ever seen these creatures, but it does not stop the Darkling from hunting them. On their own, each of Morozova's amplifiers would already be the most powerful amplifier ever known. Together, all three would make a Grisha virtually unstoppable.

The first creature is the Stag, a massive white stag rumored to haunt the forests of northern Ravka. The Stag's antlers can be fashioned into Morozova's Collar. In both the books and the show, both Alina and the Stag give off a high-pitched chime that only Mal can hear; it's how he can sense when the Stag is close. In the books, pieces of the antler are sawed off and Fabrikator David Kostyk binds the ends together around her neck. In the show, it's more gruesome, with him sinking the antlers partway into her flesh and bones.

The second of Morozova's creatures is the Sea Whip, whose glittering scales can be fashioned into the amplifier the Sea Whip's Fetter. The Sea Whip goes by the proper name of Rusalye, a legendary beast in Ravkan folktales. Some say it's an ice dragon, others a sea creature. In some tales, he was a dragon prince cursed to guard a treacherous part of the True Sea known as the Bone Road. In others, he would kidnap beautiful women and pull them underwater where they would drown. In the books, Alina and Mal, with the help of a few others, find Rusalye in the icy, frigid waters off the coast of Fjerda.

The third and last creature is the Firebird, believed by many to be the symbol of Ravka. The mythical creature is said to be a massive bird with wings of fire, the tears of which can cure wounds and whose cry can lull entire armies to sleep. In the books, Alina and her allies do find a Firebird south of the village where Alina and Mal were born, all the way in Shu Han. However, though the Firebird exists, Alina and Mal both realize that the real Firebird amplifier is Mal himself. Each book in the series follows each one of the amplifiers as its McGuffin. If the show follows the same pattern, Shadow and Bone season 2 will be all about Rusalye, the Sea Whip.
