Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Might Return Depending On Player Demand

Mass Effect 3's multiplayer mode could be reintegrated into Mass Effect Legendary Edition, but only if there's enough demand for it, according to the latter's project director. Restoring the feature would also depend on sales of the Legendary Edition in general, which launches on May 14 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

The original 2012 release of Mass Effect 3 included a co-operative horde mode called Galaxy at War. This supported up to four players, who were tasked with surviving incoming enemies and completing various objectives. In-game currency was used to unlock new characters and items, and for about a year BioWare hosted challenges with special rewards. Collective efforts were even able to influence the single-player story through a "Galactic Readiness" system - which of course had to be altered for the Legendary Edition if no one is online.

"I would never say no to that [restoring multiplayer]," BioWare's Mac Walters tells CNET. Beyond demand, reviving Galaxy at War is also reportedly contingent on finding the time and resources needed to bring the mode up to both BioWare and gamers' standards. It was cut from Mass Effect Legendary Edition to focus work on the single-player core, which smooths out and modernizes the three original games. A particular emphasis was put on Mass Effect 1, which dates back to 2007 and has comparatively rough graphics and gameplay mechanics, such as its infamously bouncy Mako rover.

Galaxy at War did have fans, but faded into obscurity when compared to other multiplayer options which were available the same year. Its competition included the likes of Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, not to mention older games such as Counter-Strike and Gears of War 3, the latter of which had its own horde mode. Players were coming to Mass Effect 3 primarily to see the conclusion of the series' single-player story, though even that proved so controversial that a re-edited version was released to appease the gaming public. That ending will be the default in the Legendary Edition, and achieving the best Galactic Readiness will depend either on a high completion rate or on finishing all three games in order.

BioWare has had to change or omit a number of aspects of Mass Effect to create the Legendary Edition. The Pinnacle Station DLC is missing because its source code was corrupt, for example, and cutscenes have lost some shots of Miranda Lawson - played by Yvonne Strahovski - because they overly objectified the character. More positively, the series' elevator rides have been shortened, mostly due to advances in storage technology.
