How Community's Movie Can Explain What Happened To Brie Larson's Rachel

If the Community sequel movie ever happens, it can finally explain what happened to Rachel, a character memorably played by Brie Larson. The actress appeared in three episodes of the comedy series originally created by Dan Harmon while her career was reaching new levels. Since then, Larson has become an Oscar-winner and a leading star in the MCU, portraying Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. With a resurgence of popularity surrounding the series due to streaming, the interest in a movie is higher than ever, and the project could finally shed light on Rachel's mysterious fate in Community.

Larson made her Community debut in season 4's "Herstory of Dance" as the student overseeing the coat check room at a dance being hosted by Greendale Community College. Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) met the quirky Rachel despite having two different dates that night. The pair had obvious chemistry, but nothing came of their encounter throughout the rest of the season. However, Larson reprised her role in season 5's "Analysis of Cork-Based Networking," which featured Abed asking Rachel out on a date after reuniting on campus. A few episodes later, Rachel was revealed to be Abed's girlfriend, and there was even a tease that she would move into Abed and Annie's (Alison Brie) apartment in place of Troy (Donald Glover), who left in season 5.

Even though Abed and Rachel had disagreements, the two were on good terms and still together after Rachel's third Community episode. Granted, Larson didn't appear in the series again, and her existence was only mentioned once more. In Community season 6 premiere "Ladders," Abed made a meta remark questioning what happened to the girl he was dating. The real answer presumably stemmed from Larson's increasingly busy schedule. Though she wasn't cast as Captain Marvel until 2016, Larson had several film projects in the works around the time of her Community role. That said, the fictional universe still has the opportunity to properly explain Rachel's disappearance through the Community sequel movie.

While Harmon and the Community cast are adamant that a sequel movie will happen, there hasn't been a true confirmation just yet. If it does come to fruition, the plot would likely take place a few years after the existing study group members went their separate ways at the end of season 6. The movie would certainly provide updates on the lives of the core character, with Abed being a major figure. He could be the one to finally provide insight into Rachel's whereabouts, considering she was his only girlfriend in the series. Maybe Abed and Rachel got back together after college, allowing for a special cameo appearance by Larson, who could directly reveal the fate of Rachel.

Having Larson appear in a Community movie would benefit the project based on her ever-growing star power. Though Harmon didn't oversee Community season 4, he's been noted as referring to Larson's involvement as one of the season's lone highlights, which is why he brought her back for season 5. It would also be fitting for Larson to appear in Anthony and Joe Russon have any role in a sequel film. The former Community directors also moved onto the MCU and directed Larson in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. The connections are there; all aspects just need to fall in place for some real payoff centered on Larson's Rachel.
