Elizabeth Olsen Knew Doctor Strange 2 Story Before Wrapping WandaVision

Elizabeth Olsen learned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' story not long before wrapping on WandaVisionThough she joined the MCU back in 2014 with an appearance in the end-credit scene for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Olsen is enjoying her busiest period yet within the franchise. Earlier this year, her Scarlet Witch took center stage in the Disney+ series WandaVision, a show which has earned Olsen raves and awards buzz. It also laid the groundwork for her next MCU appearance: Next year's Doctor Strange 2.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange 2 will once again star Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular master of the mystic arts. He and Olsen will be joined by returning stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams. Xochitl Gomez will make her MCU debut as America Chavez. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, though it's said Doctor Strange 2 will dip into the horror genre for its adventure into the multiverse. It remains to be seen when more details will emerge, though fans might be waiting a bit longer. As it turns out, Olsen had to wait a while to learn the plot too.

Olsen recently appeared on THR's Awards Chatter podcast to talk WandaVision and her MCU future. This, of course, means she touched upon Doctor Strange 2. Interestingly, despite being attached to the film for a year, Olsen didn't hear about the story until last August. Due to the pandemic, she still had some weeks left on WandaVision when she got the Doctor Strange 2 lowdown:

“I really wish that there was a plan that someone shared with me a little sooner [laughs]. I found out about Doctor Strange 2 and what the story was before we went for the last 8 weeks of filming WandaVision during the pandemic. I found out in, like, August, and then I wrapped WandaVision on a Wednesday and went to England [on] Friday.”

Marvel is known for keeping their plots a secret even to those who will actually be bringing them to life. In a particularly drastic instance of this, Tom Holland wasn't aware he was appearing at Tony Stark's funeral in Avengers: Endgame until actually turning up on set. When compared to that, Olsen actually got lucky in learning about Doctor Strange 2's story before filming began. At the same time, one has to wonder if knowing the plot would've impacted her WandaVision performance if she had known it sooner.

There was once a time when Doctor Strange was supposed to appear in WandaVision, but those plans unfortunately had to be scrapped. As a result, Doctor Strange 2 will be the first time he and Wanda truly interact with each other. This is a partnership fans have been waiting a while for, and it'll be interesting to finally learn what brings them together. With Doctor Strange 2 not scheduled for release until March of next year, it might be a while before Marvel shares these details. Rest assured though: All will become clear in the future.
