Will NBC move forward with Debris season 2? The first series installment ended in May 2021 and includes multiple cliffhangers that set up larger storylines. Debris season 1 received positive reviews from critics, which suggests that NBC's X-Files-esque sci-fi show will continue.
In Debris season 1, the remains of an extraterrestrial craft arrive on Earth. As CIA agent Bryan Beneventi (Jonathan Tucker) and MI6 operative Finola Jones (Riann Steele) investigate various "events," they realize that the collective debris can sense human emotions and seems to feed off various individuals. The plot thickens when Finola's genius father, George (Tyrone Benskin), shows up alive six months after his alleged suicide. Under the guidance of CIA leader Craig Maddox (Norbert Leo Butz), the protagonists attempt to pinpoint the motivations of the alien debris by locating a chunk that will purportedly reveal a complete map to every piece.
The Debris season 1 finale includes several revelations, but also raises more questions about the characters' intentions. For example, Finola and Bryan learn that Maddox has been using George's research to weaponize debris, but only to protect America from other countries that have been doing the same thing. In fact, Maddox warns his team that George's knowledge makes him especially vulnerable, which foreshadows a climactic reveal about the scientist. Moving forward, there's much to consider about the memory-wiping debris and a ball of light that has traveled to a cave in Sedona, Arizona.
Debris season 2 hasn't officially been ordered by NBC. Due to the scope of season 1, along with the positive critic reviews, new episodes will most likely be produced. Expect NBC to greenlight Debris season 2 by early summer 2021.
As of now, Debris season 2 will presumably debut in March 2022. NBC may ultimately shift the science fiction series to its fall schedule, but it will likely be part of the spring lineup moving forward, particularly as it has a shorter season of 13 episodes. If the network keeps the show in its regular Monday night slot, Debris season 2 could arguably debut on February 28, 2022 or March 7, 2022.
The Debris season 1 finale packs a lot into the storyline, which may cause confusion about the premise for new episodes. The main takeaway is that George deceived both Fiona and Bryan about his intentions. He reveals that he's been plotting with the terrorist group INFLUX, and believes that the debris will allow human intelligence to evolve. However, it's unclear if George is being manipulated by the INFLUX member Otto (John Noble), who seems to have privileged information about the alien telesphere that transported to Sedona, Arizona, where Brill (Sebastian Roché) and the Native American Dakheya Nakai have devised a plan that involves a Fiona clone.
In Debris season 2, Bryan will need to overcome some physical and psychological issues after George's betrayal. He experiences side effects from injections that he's been taking after an "event," and will presumably be assisted in some form by his boss, Maddox, who betrayed a Russian contact in order to use the alien technology of the debris that could benefit his son's health. Debris season 2 will undoubtedly address a black figure that appears to George and implies that he doesn't have sound mental health. Fiona is being positioned as the season 2 hero, and the clone subplot will complicate her character arc. Season 1 of the science fiction show establishes the main players and their motivations, and so Debris season 2 will explore the intent of the alien life form and the science behind their telesphere.
