Cyberpunk 2077 Gets New Director To Oversee Game's Updates

Cyberpunk 2077 has gotten a new director to oversee the game's recovery through future updates. The behind-the-scenes shake-up for Cyberpunk 2077 comes after the departure of former quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, who will be replaced by Gabriel Amatangelo as the game's overall director.

Cyberpunk 2077 has had no shortage of controversies since launching in December 2020. The game was highly anticipated as one of the titles that would define the entire generation and revolutionize the RPG genre, but it ended up being a massive bust, with game breaking bugs, an awful performance on consoles, and more. CDPR had to do an apology tour with refunds, but it has hardly saved the game. Since then, Cyberpunk 2077 has issued multiple updates in an effort to fix the game and although it's in a better state than launch, it still hasn't met the standards of many gamers.

To help improve the game and develop new expansions for it, CD Projekt Red has promoted Gabriel Amatangelo as the new game director of Cyberpunk 2077 (via GamesIndustry.biz). There's no clear idea of when the game will be in its best possible state, but hopefully, Amatangelo can help create a roadmap that will provide a vision for the future of the RPG. The new director has previously worked on games like Dragon Age: Inquisition, so he has experience in the genre and can hopefully help Cyberpunk 2077 meet its full potential.

The game's former director, Adam Badowski, will oversee other responsibilities within CDPR, including the development of multiple new games. Many gamers are still awaiting the return of Cyberpunk 2077 on the PlayStation Store, so hopefully, the likes of Amatangelo can help restore the game on the platform in a short amount of time. The game is almost 6 months old and CDPR remains confident that it will bring enough updates out to fix the game, but there has been plenty of criticism lobbed at the studio for even releasing it in its launch state.

Whether or not CDPR's focus on fixing Cyberpunk 2077 will delay or even outright cancel other projects, such as the multiplayer spin-off of the futuristic RPG, remains to be seen. Still, with many still waiting to play Cyberpunk 2077 until it's fixed, it's likely it won't be the franchise CDPR wants it to be for a while. With just 6 months until the game becomes one year old, CDPR will need to figure out a strategy to fix the game and release new content before people move on from it.
