Batman Goes Global In New Anthology From International Creators

In addition to the creative team being from around the world, the anthology will also be localized in North America, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Russia, Poland, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, China, Korea, and Japan. A list of the international publishers and the distribution partners was also released and includes Urban Comics of France, ECC Ediciones of Spain, Panini of Italy, Brazil, and Germany, CREW of the Czech Republic, Azbooka-Atticus of Russia, Egmont Polska of Poland, JBC of Turkey, Editorial Televisa of Mexico and Central America, Sigongsa of Korea, Starfish Media of China, and Shopro of Japan. Batman: The World is just one of many events surrounding the Caped Crusader, but it looks to be one of his most far-reaching events ever.

DC Comics announced the event and released a complete list of the creative team on their website. The details for only one story featured in the anthology were mentioned in the press release, "Global City." The story is written by Brian Azzarello with artwork by Lee Bermejo, the same team who worked on game-changing Batman-related events such as Batman: DamnedJoker, and Batman/Deathblow. It sets up the anthology style for the story by introducing the events from Batman's past and present explored in the stories from the rest of the international creative team. Each localization of the comic will feature a different cover from a story's international creative team, which can be seen below.

The full creative team for Batman: The World unveiled includes writer Mathieu Gabella and Thierry Martin of France, writer and artist Paco Roca of Spain, writer Alessandro Bilotta and artist Nicola Mari of Italy, writer Benjamin von Eckartsberg and artist Thomas von Kummant of Germany, writer Stepan Kopriva and artist Michal Suchánek of the Czech Republic, and writer Tomasz Kolodziejczak and artists Piotr Kowalski and Brad Simpson of Poland. Representing Turkey is writer Ertan Ergil and artist Ethem Onur Bilgiç, the creative team for Mexico is writer Alberto Chimal and artist Rulo Valdés, the Brazil team is writer Carlos Estefan and artist Pedro Mauro, and writer Inpyo Jeon and artists Jae-kwang Park and Kim Jung Gi represent Korea. The last set of creatives include writers Xu Xiaodong and Lu Xiaotong with artists Qiu Kun and Yi Nan for China, writers Kirill Kutuzov and Egor Prutov along with artist Natalia Zaidova for Russia, and lastly, writer and artist Okadaya Yuichi for Japan. This worldwide event takes place fittingly around Batman Day, which is known for being a globe-spanning event in and of itself.

Batman may have visited other countries before, but it is truly a unique turn of events to have those adventures be written and drawn by a creative team based in that country. It will add an air of authenticity to these international stories and present an opportunity to show how Batman, as DC publisher and chief creative officer Jim Lee puts it, "is a phenomenon that transcends languages and borders." Batman: The World will be out on September 14, 2021, right before Batman Day, which is on September 18th this year.
