A leaked image of a Funko Pop! toy has spoiled a major character reveal in Marvel's upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie. With the film being one of many Marvel projects releasing in 2021, news on the movie has been relatively scarce as the studio has focused most of their marketing on other series or movies about to launch in the coming weeks. Toy sales and promotions are usually planned out months ahead of everything else though, so it is no surprise to see spoilers for the movie coming by way of box art from merchandise.
The 25th film in the MCU, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will not be in theaters until September of 2021. It will be Marvel's first film with an Asian-American lead, actor Simu Liu, alongside rising star, Awkwafina, in a supporting role as the character, Katy. The film has been in development since 2001, though Marvel has released information letting fans know that it will feature the true Mandarin villain and the Ten Rings organization that has been hinted at through many other MCU films.
According to a report on CBR, a Twitter user named SCBRMidia posted images of Funko Pop! toys for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings that included a dragon figure. Alongside the other leaked figures, including Shang-Chi, Katy, Wenwu, Jiang Li, Death Dealer and Razor Fist, the dragon stands out as he is called "The Great Protector," a name not associated with any known Marvel comics character. Yet, there have been rumors of Marvel's Fin Fang Foom character appearing in the movie since 2020, and the Funko Pop! toy might just be the confirmation fans have been waiting for. While it may not be his name, Fin Fang Foom is indeed a dragon and in the comics has many ties to one of the other major characters in the film, Wenwu, a.k.a, the Mandarin.
If it is not Fin Fang Foom, Marvel does have another dragon currently in the MCU known as Shou-Lao, a figure hinted at in the Iron Fist Netflix series. With Shou-Lao's reddish scales, he is a better match for the toy's red and white skin coloring, especially when compared to Fin Fang Foom, who is normally seen with green skin in the comics. Shou-Lao is also a better fit for the "Great Protector" moniker with his ties to the origins of the heroic Iron Fist character.
It would be an odd choice to go with Shou-Lao for the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie though, as the dragon is not really associated with Shang-Chi in the comics. Fan excitement for Fin Fang Foom has been evident for some time now, and it seems hard to believe that Marvel would pass up the opportunity to use the character. As for the visual discrepancies, the comics already established that Fin Fang Foom could shapeshift, so it does not seem that much of a stretch to imagine him changing his colors to hide his true appearance, or to even pretend to be some benign "Great Protector" to fool other characters in the film.
