Portal 2 Reloaded Mod Lets Players Travel Between Timelines

Just in time for Portal 2's 10th anniversary, the modding community has dropped the long-teased Reloaded mod, which lets players explore brand-new puzzle mechanics, two different timelines, and an additional portal. Modder Jannis Brinkmann originally announced the free community mod last fall, promising an experience that would build upon the core themes of the fan-favorite puzzle title.

Apart from collaborating with developer ClockStone on 2017's Bridge Constructor Portal, Valve has allowed Portal to lie dormant for a decade. Fans are eager to do whatever they can to keep the brand alive through mods, however. Earlier this year, for example, a group of players announced Portal 2: Desolation. The mod will follow Diana Mendez, a character whose portal gun is equipped via cybernetic enhancement system. With 40 to 50 test chambers in the works, Desolation sounds as if it will offer players quite a bit of content. Though Desolation presently lacks a firm release date, players can jump into another community-created mod right now for free.

As noted by DSOGaming, the Steam release of Portal 2's Reloaded mod is officially live. The new content takes place across two separate timelines, present day and a reality set 20 years in the future. Interestingly, the time-traveling aspects of Reloaded also play into the unique puzzle mechanics. Players can additionally expect to experience a third portal - denoted by a green rectangle - 25 new puzzles, over 100 extra voice lines, and a host of original music. See all of the above on display in the launch trailer below:

Since today marks the 10th anniversary of Portal 2's release, the launch of Reloaded could not have come at a better time. And early player reviews on Steam indicate fans would do well to at least give a try, especially considering Valve's seeming disinterest in developing the much-coveted Portal 3.

The studio did once have its sights set on a prequel to the original game. Known as Aperture Camera, the cancelled prequel project centered on a fresh mechanic that saw players photographing objects, then using the images to reposition said objects while solving various puzzles. Reason suggests such a premise won't see the light of day in a commercial project, given that Valve itself is responsible for the prototype's released footage and details.
