Mortal Kombat (2021): Ranking All The Fatalities | ScreenRant

Mortal Kombat has finally come to theaters and HBO Max. It boasts a cast of iconic and powerful characters, the expected beginning of a new cinematic universe, and a hard R-rating. With that rating, not only does Kano drop an F-bomb in nearly every sentence but the gore that made the games so infamous is present.

The 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat definitely remembers its origins and fixes the one issue even fans of the 1995 movie had which was the lack of fatalities that were faithful to the game. The reboot goes all out with its fatalities and the best part is that they are always unique and executed well.

9 Rings Of Arcana - Sonya Blade

This fatality is actually Sonya Blade's second in a row. After Sonya discovers her arcana, she rushes in to assist Cole Young in his fight against Mileena. Tributing the games, Sonya fires pink rings of energy from her wrist which blast right through Mileena's abdomen.

There's nothing particularly bad about this fatality, it's just extremely quick. Plus, this fatality was done on a fan-favorite character many weren't expecting to die. However, it does end on a nice close-up on the hole in Mileena's stomach, with her spine exposed inside.

8 Soul Man - Shang Tsung

In a shocking twist, Kung Lao is killed by Shang Tsung despite being a show-stealer. Chin Han's Shang Tsung quotes the famous line invented by the 1995 version: "Your soul is mine!" He brings Kung Lao right to him and then uses his power to devour his soul.

The fatality is effective in shocking the viewer but it lacks any kind of gore factor. The closest thing is that Kung Lao's body withers and becomes a husk.

7 Shanking A Shokan - Cole Young

To save his family from Prince Goro's attack, Cole Young unleashes his arcana; it gives him golden armor and a pair of tonfas. The armor absorbs damage and turns it into strength for Cole. Using this, he slices off one of Goro's hands, impales his stomach, slices it open, then finishes off Goro by stabbing him through the eye.

Unique for the character, very graphic with some stellar animation on Goro's gory wounds, and impactful. A perfect fatality for a new character like Cole and would fit along with the many gory fatalities of Mortal Kombat 11.

6 Eye For An Eye - Sonya Blade

Of course, Kano betrays the Earthrealm fighters leading to the big fights between them and Outworld. Sonya and Kano battle in Sonya's headquarters with Kano utilizing his arcana: his eye-lasers. Kano puts her in a hold and taunts her, showing how cocky he is.

Sonya takes a lawn gnome and jams it right into his eye. Not only is this perfect karma but also sets up for the character to get his signature bionic eye. Hopefully, this was not a permanent end for Kano because fans found him to be one of the best characters.

5 Lin Kuei Slaughter - Scorpion

Mortal Kombat does not waste any time because after Hanzo Hasashi AKA Scorpion finds his family dead, he unleashes his fury. Utilizing one of the most iconic Mortal Kombat weapons: the kunai, Scorpion wipes out Lin Kuei assassins.

The camera work is great, the kills are all brutal, Hiroyuki Sanada nails the physicality, and the gore is some of the most visceral. It even ends with Scorpion doing his famous spear attack and pulling an enemy toward him.

4 Thunderous Applause - Jax

Jax takes on Reiko with his arcana-powered bionic arms on the famous Pit stage from the games and it's a bloody fight on its own. The metal arms cause bits and pieces of Reiko's face to fling off and Jax's knuckles to stain with blood. At this point, Jax could have uppercut Reiko into the spikes and fans would have loved it.

Instead, Jax performs a fatality lifted from his debut in the original Mortal Kombat II game. He slams his metal hands together on Reiko's head. Just like the game, the head explodes in a fountain of meat and blood. Jax even gets a one-liner to finish it off just like the more recent games.

3 Unleashing The Beast - Liu Kang

Another fatality that homages the games. Liu Kang first does the iconic bicycle kick to send Kabal into a tar pit, stopping him from using his super speed. Liu Kang shows his ferocity by using his pyrokinesis to create a giant dragon made from flame. It bites down on Kabal then phases into the ground, scorching the evil speedster.

Kabal walks forward but succumbs to his wounds, falling into the pit. Already worthy of applause there but Liu Kang says the perfect word as Kabal dies: "Fatality."

2 Revenge - Scorpion

This version of Bi-Han AKA Sub-Zero was much more villainous and worthy of Scorpion's hatred. That's why it makes it so satisfying to see Scorpion and Cole brutalize him before Cole leaves it up to Scorpion to finish him.

Scorpion unleashes a flame jet right from his mouth as part of his face turns into a skeleton. He completely roasts Sub-Zero until all that's left is a charred corpse. Yet another famous fatality that harkens back to the very first Mortal Kombat game ever made.

1 Hat Trick - Kung Lao

It starts with Nitara attempting to surprise attack Kung Lao. The Shaolin monk is prepared and uses the momentum to get on top of her. Meanwhile, he sends his razor-rimmed hat into the ground where it begins to spin like a buzzsaw. Kung Lao forces Nitara to the ground, the rim going right between her eyes to slice her completely in half; blood and meat spray all over his face before he leaps off.

He summons his hat back to him, then finishes off by correctly claiming, "Flawless victory." It is everything that makes a fatality great. The gore is outlandish yet so visceral that it could make someone sick. The one-liner is delivered superbly by Max Huang and it acts as a combination of his fatalities from Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat X.
