Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection PS4, Xbox One, & PC Dates Announced

Less than half a month after confirming plans to make the ports, Capcom has announced that Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection will be coming to the PC, PS4, and Xbox One - and by extension, presumably the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S - on June 1. Pre-orders should already be live, with accompanying bonus content varying from platform to platform.

The game is a reboot of the Ghosts 'N Goblins series, and first shipped as a Switch exclusive in February. Although it does spruce up graphics and sound, one of the key additions is actually four difficulty levels. Earlier titles were often notoriously hard, scaring away not just kids but veteran gamers. To make things even friendlier, a Page mode allows unlimited on-the-spot respawns, and a second local player can join as one of three supporting characters, Barry, Kerry, or Archie. These can create defensive barriers, carry the first player through danger, or build bridges, respectively.

Steam pre-orders for Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection include wallpaper and an undefined "mini" soundtrack. Both PlayStation and Xbox pre-orders are eligible for 24 hours of early access - PS4 players will get two dashboard themes, but these won't carry over to the PS5, even though the game itself should work. Sony overhauled its operating system for the new console, and Capcom likely believes that there's a larger PS4 audience for the time being.

Capcom is separately bringing Capcom Arcade Stadium to the same platforms on May 25. The retro compilation is almost more of a storefront - while 1943: Battle for Midway is bundled for free, the app's 31 additional games must be bought separately, in packs of 10 priced at $14.99, or $39.99 as a complete package. On its own, the original Ghosts 'n Goblins is $1.99. Alongside its new platforms, Arcade Stadium is getting a compilation-wide Invincibility mode, and 32 purchasable display frames. Steam shoppers can buy a "mini-album" featuring the theme songs “A Brand New Day” and "Teenage Blues."

Capcom's next big release, of course, is Resident Evil Village, due on May 7. The company has long traded in nostalgia however, and Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection could be an attempt to kickstart the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise in a way that paves a path for bigger sequels. Until February, the series had been dormant since 2010, and even then the prior release was an iOS game that didn't support Apple's now-standard Retina Display technology. The first Ghosts 'N Goblins was an arcade game released in 1985, ultimately ported to everything from the NES and Game Boy Color to the Amiga and Commodore 64. Only time will tell what this new era of Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection might bring.
