FF7 Remake: Intergrade & InterMISSION Differences Explained

An upgraded version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to PS5 this summer. Square Enix has gone with some confusing names for the upgrade and its accompanying DLC, though, so fans might be confused as to the differences between FF7 Remake Intergrade and INTERmission.

FF7 Remake is one of the best-looking games on PS4, but - while it does load a lot faster on PS5 when running through backwards compatibility - playing it on Sony's newest console doesn't yield any shiny new features. To that end, Square Enix announced a PS5 version of FF7 Remake will be released in June and will include new DLC content featuring Yuffie from FF7 (and Weiss from Dirge of Cerberus).

It turns out the situation is a lot more confusing than it may have originally seemed. There are many differences between FF7 Remake Intergrade and INTERmission, especially in regards to what content is available for free and how each part of the PS5-exclusive package affected by what the player already owns.

Intergrade is the name given to the PS5 version of FF7 Remake, which will give FF7R a number of graphical upgrades and quality-of-life improvements. Anyone who has purchased FF7 Remake on PS4 will be able to play Intergrade for free, with the caveat that those who own the game on disc will also need to have disc-based PS5. The version of FF7 Remake that was given away via PlayStation Plus a few months ago is not eligible for the Intergrade upgrade. People who don't own FF7 Remake at all (or only own the PS Plus version) can purchase FF7 Remake Intergrade for full price, which will grant them access to Episode INTERmission.

FF7R Episode INTERmission is the name of two DLC chapters starring Yuffie from FF7. Players who purchase Intergrade for PS5 will receive INTERmission for free; however, those receiving the Intergrade upgrade itself for free (due to owning the PS4 version of FF7 Remake) will need to pay $20 for INTERmission separately. The INTERmission DLC will not be available for FF7R on PS4.

The DLC chapters involve Yuffie breaking into Midgar and working with Avalanche HQ as she searches for powerful Materia in possession of the Shinra Corporation. Yuffie will be playable during these segments, and she has her own unique fighting style. It has also been confirmed that Yuffie will encounter both Cloud's party of main characters and the members of Deepground from Dirge of Cerberus during her story, so INTERmission will likely provide some important narrative details.
