Bridgerton Lady Danbury Actor Responds to Regé-Jean Page’s Exit

Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury on the hit Netflix period drama, Bridgerton, has weighed in on breakout star Regé-Jean Page’s departure from the series. Based on Julia Quinn’s novels, Bridgerton takes place in London during the Regency era in the early nineteenth century. The show’s first season, like the first novel, follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) on her journey to finding love with Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings (Page). Chris Van Dusen created the show, which is a product of executive producer Shonda Rhimes’s production company, Shondaland.

Since its Christmas premiere last year, Bridgerton has become massively popular with a record-breaking 82 million households tuning in by the end of January, making it Netflix’s biggest series ever. The streaming service officially renewed the series for an additional three seasons, but Page will not be returning for the second season. Season 2, which has already begun filming, will revolve around Daphne’s eldest brother, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), as he searches for love of his own. Even though Page’s character will no longer be the center focus of the show, many fans were still shocked to learn he wouldn’t be making an appearance at all, considering Simon is Anthony’s brother-in-law and friend.

While Simon will not be back for Bridgerton’s second season, Daphne and Lady Danbury will both be returning. Lady Danbury became a mother figure to Simon after his real mother’s death, and the two have remained close throughout the years. Andoh, the actor who brought Lady Danbury to life, spoke with E! News about Page’s exit from the series. Andoh’s response can be read below:

Season 2, it’s Anthony Bridgerton, so there you are, you know that’s the arc of the show and you know we all love Regé and we’re all gonna miss Regé, but you know, it’s not a huge surprise… He’s a lovely man and he’ll be my friend for life.

Based on the official announcement of the departure posted to Bridgerton’s social media accounts, Page’s response to that announcement, and now Andoh’s statement, it seems as though there is nothing but love between Page and the Bridgerton family. This could potentially mean that the actor might make a surprise cameo in future seasons of the show, despite not appearing in season 2. Page and the masterminds behind Bridgerton are well aware of how disappointed many fans are due to Page’s exit, and they are also well aware of how excited fans would be to see Page play Simon again, so it only makes sense that they bring him back at some point in the future to reward loyal viewers.

The bright side of Page’s absence from Bridgerton is that it allows his schedule to open up for other projects, so fans will still be able to watch him perform. He is currently working on a film titled, The Gray Man, in which he is starring alongside Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. He is also attached to the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie. It’s smart for Page to be striking while the iron is hot; he is bound to have a long career in Hollywood, but hopefully, he won't forget the show that jump-started his success.
