Avatar: The 10 Best Action Sequences In The Series, Ranked

Despite being a piece of children's animation, Avatar: The Last Airbender remains one of the most profound and exciting television stories of the 21st century. The show has continuously earned praise and accolades for nearly every aspect of its production, including the writing, voice acting, animation, and production values. Few shows are as exciting as Avatar, and each episode contains at least one thrilling action sequence composed of gorgeous animation and rousing music.

Of course, not all action sequences are created equal, and some are obviously better than others. These are the best action sequences that the show had to offer.

10 Confrontation At Tu Zin

Book two's The Chase features a great action sequence in the Confrontation at Tu Zin. Taking place in the abandoned Earth Kingdom village, this confrontation sees Azula battling the likes of Team Avatar, Iroh, and Zuko. It's a great battle, and the unique setting proves very memorable.

It also ends in spectacularly tragic fashion, as Azula blasts Iroh with a shot of fire. The fight is also notable for containing all four elements at once, with Aang, Katara, Toph, and Zuko all firing on Azula with their respective powers following the attack on Iroh.

9 Katara Bloodbends

Book three's The Puppetmaster is one of Avatar's most memorable episodes, and also one of its most horrifying. It is here that Katara learns the "art" of Bloodbending from Hama. Katara is a master Waterbender, and as Hama rightfully points out, there is a lot of water coursing through a human's veins.

Their relationship culminates in a brief battle, in which Katara uses Bloodbending against Hama to save Aang from the Blood-bended Sokka.

8 Momo Vs Appa

"Nightmares and Daydreams" features one of the show's most memorable fight sequences, even if it's not to be taken seriously. In the episode, a sleep-deprived Aang hallucinates a hilarious battle between Momo and Appa.

The two appeared clad in traditional Japanese garb, with Appa donning a particularly cool-looking suit of red armor. They proceed to charge and battle each other with swords, while crowds of sheep cheer from the sidelines. The fight only ends after Aang runs away to "jump in a cold waterfall."

7 The Avatar And The Fire Lord

The Avatar and the Fire Lord provide some much-needed and welcome exposition regarding the series' lore. It concerns the story of Roku and Sozin, two childhood friends who take very different paths in life. Roku is the Avatar, succeeding Kyoshi, and Sozin is the leader of the Fire Nation.

Roku's personal island was eventually consumed by a volcanic eruption, and Sozin flew in to aid his old friend in the escape. However, Sozin changed his mind and let Roku die of suffocation, ending his reign as Avatar and giving rise to Avatar Aang.

6 Zuko Reaffirms His Loyalty To The Fire Nation

Book 2 of Avatar is largely focused on the character development of Zuko. Viewers are given access to his tragic past, and his adventures with Iroh in Ba Sing Se made him a far more sympathetic character than he was in Book 1.

He also went through an incredible amount of development, and his arc was clearly pointing to redemption. However, this is unpredictably subverted in the Book 2 finale, when Zuko reaffirms his loyalty to the Fire Nation and attacks both Aang and Katara.

5 Sokka, Toph & Suki Take Down The Airships

Sokka is unique within the Avatar cast, as he's the only one of the core group not to have bending powers. However, that doesn't mean he isn't useful. In Part 3 of the finale, Sozin's Comet, Sokka, Toph, and Suki team up to take down the Fire Nation's invading airships.

This involves hijacking an airship and crashing it into the others, not to mention some uses of Sokka's trusty boomerang. The group is successful in their pursuit, and the sequence reaffirms Sokka's usefulness, intelligence, and combat prowess - lack of bending powers be damned.

4 Battle Of Ba Sing Se

Book 2 contains the fantastic Battle of Ba Sing Se, in which Azula and the Fire Nation attempt to breach the city with a massive drill. Aang is forced to take on Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee, and he is successful in stopping the drill from breaching the wall of Ba Sing Se.

The sequence contains one of the most rousing visuals in the entire series, as Aang makes an air bubble, climbs the wall, and runs back down in a plume of trailing smoke before crashing down into the drill.

3 Aang Becomes The Ocean Spirit

After Zhao captures and kills the Moon Spirit Tui, Aang entered the Avatar State and fused with the Ocean Spirit, La. The result was a giant fish-like creature affectionally known as Koizilla. While in the form of the Koizilla, Aang absolutely obliterates the invading Fire Nation forces, attacking by both land and sea.

The visuals of the Koizilla are spectacular, and the epic music accompanying the attack help make this one of the most memorable action sequences of the series.

2 Aang Vs Ozai

The entirety of Avatar was building to this fight, and it did not disappoint. The entire battle lasts around 15 minutes, and it contains many spectacular visuals that remain indelibly ingrained in the memory.

These include Ozai blowing up Aang's protective boulder, Aang entering the Avatar State and making himself a little flying circle out of all four elements, and Aang taking away Ozi's fire bending in a beautiful display of color.

1 Zuko Vs Azula

As epic as the Aang and Ozai fight is, the finale will forever be remembered for the climactic battle between Zuko and Azula. There are various reasons for this. There is the emotion and tragedy behind the fight itself - a sense of emotion that the Aang Ozai fight obviously lacks.

There's also the gorgeous music that plays throughout the sequence, more morose and sorrowful than epic. Finally, there's the way the fight was filmed, with the music overwhelming the natural sound effects and fading them into the background, a fantastic creative decision that favors tragedy and character over sheer spectacle.
