Zack Snyder's Justice League: The Main Characters' First And Last Lines

The long and strange journey of Zack Snyder's Justice League drew a lot of attention, but in the end, fans were happy to see it result in an epic and thoroughly satisfying superhero adventure that was very much in the vision of its filmmaker. The movie has been praised as an improvement on the theatrical version in almost every way, most notably with its characters.

Snyder's long saga gives these iconic heroes time to develop into fascinating characters, along with some notable supporting players. With a four-hour runtime, the character development is far superior and the first and last lines of the main characters show their complexity in this version.

10 Steppenwolf

"Defenders… They have failed a hundred thousand worlds." - "He's here."

Steppenwolf arrives in Themyscira to collect the first Mother Box and taunts the Amazonians, saying he's faced defenders many times and they always fail. After bringing the three Mother Boxes together, Steppenwolf announces the arrival of his master, Darkseid.

The first line helps to establish Steppenwolf as a real threat as it suggests conquering worlds is nothing new to him. Despite his own power, his final line shows that the real threat to fear is Darkseid.

9 Silas Stone

"Lab's all yours, Howard." - "The time is now."

After working late in his lab, Silas Stone lets the janitor know he's all finished. At the end of the movie, Cyborg listens to a recording Silas left for him before his death in which he tells his son that now is the time for him to come forward and be the hero he knows he is.

The first line is a hint at how Silas is constantly buried in his work. His final line acknowledges the mistakes that obsession with work causes and his hopes to make amends with his son and encourage him to make the most of his new life.

8 Alfred

"My god, Master Wayne, but this is cold." - "Must be."

As Alfred comes to Iceland to pick up Bruce on his recruitment mission, he jokes about how cold it is and how they should look for meta-humans in warmer climates. At the end of the movie, Alfred joins Bruce and Diana in examining the newly-discovered massive hall that will serve as the Hall of Justice.

While Bruce might not always be the most humorous individual, Alfred is always ready with a witty remark as with his first line. His final line shows that he is always by Bruce's side as they explore their next adventure.

7 Lois Lane

"Jerry, hey." - "You're really back?"

As Lois Lane visits the memorial to Superman, she greets the policeman on guard and brings him a coffee. After Clark is brought back to life, he mentions the engagement ring she is wearing, letting her know that she remembers and he is really back.

The familiar way Lois greets the police shows that she visits this spot quite frequently and suggests she is still grieving the loss of Clark. After reuniting, she is able to finally allow herself to believe that he has returned and that they have their life together back.

6 Flash

"Am I late? Oh, I'm so late." - "Thanks, Dad."

Barry Allen is introduced as he rushes to a job interview he is already late for. After getting a job in a crime lab, Barry tells his father, who is wildly proud of his son.

The first line is, of course, a funny bit of irony for anyone who knows the character. The idea of a speedster superhero constantly being late is perfect for Barry's wild persona. While he is largely the comic relief, the last line is a reminder that Barry is still a young man who wants his dad to come home.

5 Aquaman

"He said he climbed over the mountain." - "I gotta go see my father."

When Bruce Wayne arrives in an Icelandic village, Arthur Curry acts as a translator to the village elder. Following the final battle, Aquaman visits Mera and Vanko before heading off to see his human father.

His first line shows how far Bruce came to see him while also showing how Arthur likes to remain hidden, allowing the elder to do the talking. His final line sets up his own solo movie while also showing that Arthur is still divided between the two worlds of the humans and the Atlanteans.

4 Cyborg

"Ready?" - "He's found us."

In a flashback, Victor Stone is seen as the quarterback of his football team, rallying his team for one more game-winning play. In the epilogue's Knightmare sequence, Cyborg alerts the other survivors that Superman has found them.

Seeing Victor as the determined and confident leader on the football field compared to the reclusive Cyborg he became highlights his tragic journey. His final line sets up the coming threat only for it to be revealed to be Superman, a former ally, which introduces a lot more questions about this future.

3 Wonder Woman

"Who are you?" - "But room for more."

When terrorists take over a building, Diana uses the Lasso of Truth on one of them to discover what their plan is. While inspecting the new Hall of Justice, Bruce suggests six chairs at the table, but Diana advises they make room for more.

There is not much special about her first line other than showing the type of hero she is, wasting no time getting to the point. Her final line is the optimistic hope and promise that there are more heroes to come to join their team in the future.

2 Superman

"This is home." - "How did you get the house back from the bank?"

After being resurrected and fighting the other heroes, Clark escapes Metropolis with Lois and takes her to Kent farm which he remembers as home. After defeating Steppenwolf, Clark thanks Bruce for saving his family's farm and asks how he did it while Bruce says he bought the bank.

While he initially seems like a murderous version of Superman, his first lines confirm that he is still Clark Kent after all. Along with setting up Bruce's joke, the final line shows the bond Clark and Bruce now share with Bruce saving the only home Clark knows.

1 Batman

"I believe there is a stranger, comes to this village from the sea." -  "I guess I'll see you around."

Arriving in the Icelandic village, Bruce asks about the stranger who visits them from the sea. In the epilogue, Bruce is visited by the Martian Manhunter before he flies off.

Both the first and last lines involve Bruce discovering more heroes in the world. While the first line shows that he is seeking them out, the final line shows they now come to him.
