The CW and HBO Max have jointly acquired the rights to What We Do in the Shadows spinoff series Wellington Paranormal. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's hit 2014 mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows centers around a group of vampires living together in modern-day New Zealand. What began as a cult classic, the supernatural comedy film has earned a larger following, inspiring two spin-off series, one of which is an FX series of the same name that premiered in 2019. Its first spinoff show, Wellington Paranormal, is a New Zealand mockumentary horror-comedy series co-created by Waititi and Clement. The series premiered in 2018 and is now wrapping up its third season on New Zealand’s TVNZ 2. Now, Wellington Paranormal is heading to the U.S.
Wellington Paranormal has been picked up by both The CW and HBO Max, according to The Wrap. Under the deal, all episodes of the spinoff series will first air on The CW this summer. A day after each episode airs on The CW, they will be available for streaming on HBO Max and The CW's streaming platforms. An exact air date for the episodes has yet to be announced. The show is the first joint acquisition for The CW and HBO Max.
The series stars Karen O'Leary and Mike Minogue (who reprise their roles from What We Do in the Shadows) as police officers in the paranormal unit. The show follows the unit as they investigate supernatural occurrences in Wellington. Similar to What We Do in the Shadows, Wellington Paranormal, is a mockumentary-style comedy and shares the distinct dry humor of the film. Creators Clement and Waititi also executive produce the series, along with Paul Yates. The series is produced by The New Zealand Documentary Board.
