The Flash Season 7 Premiere: Why Cisco & Caitlin Are Missing

The season 7 premiere of The Flash saw Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) facing perhaps his greatest challenges without two of the most valued members of Team Flash: Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) and Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker). With Iris still in captivity and Nash (Tom Cavanagh), Barry is going to need the help of his original team as quickly as possible.

From the beginning, Cisco and Caitlin have been there to guide Barry Allen on his journey as the Flash. Using their vast knowledge and scientific skills, they have helped him master and control his speed, while ultimately discovering their powers as well. Aside from being valuable scientific colleagues, the two have become among Barry's closest friends and trusted advisors, guiding him through the emotional challenges of being the Flash.

The events of Crisis on Infinite Earths altered Caitlin and Cisco’s season 6 journeys. Cisco left Star Labs and Team Flash to travel the world to catalog changes and potential dangers brought about by the creation of Earth-Prime. One of those changes was a new version of nemesis Dr. Light, who seriously injured Caitlin/Killer Frost to the extent she was taken away by her mother, Dr. Carla Tannhauser, for treatment of those injuries. As a result, Barry faced the loss of his speed while trying to rescue Iris from the Mirrorverse without his teammates.

The first three episodes of season 7 of The Flash were originally planned as the final episodes of season 6. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delays meant that The Flash, like most of the Arrowverse shows, will have to use the first episodes of their delayed new seasons to wrap up last season’s stories. This extended hiatus has given The Flash producers and writers time to fine-tune their narrative plans. As a result, the season 7 premiere has Barry relying on the skills of Nash and new team members, Allegra Garcia and Chester P. Runk, to attempt the risky creation of an artificial speed force. Their success comes at the price of Nash (and the Wells doppelgangers) life. With new abilities to explore and learn, Barry is going to need Cisco and Caitlin more than ever to navigate his new reality.

In The Flash season 6 finale, Cisco was not present; he had made his way to Atlantis searching for special materials he hopes can help Barry restore or rebuild the Speed Force. His absence once again sparked rumors that actor Carlos Valdes was leaving the show. However, both the producers and the actor have debunked those rumors in news reports, reassuring fans that Cisco Ramon will be an integral part of Team Flash in season 7.

While the original plan was for Caitlin/Killer Frost to be away on an extended recovery, a decision made to accommodate actress Danielle Panabaker’s pregnancy, the delay in production has made it possible for her to return early to help Team Flash. Although scripts for the rest of the season without Caitlin/Killer Frost were already prepared, writers appear to have taken the challenge of altering existing scripts to write the character back in. Like Cisco, her early return is indicated in new promos for the next episode of The Flash.

Caitlin and Cisco’s early returns to The Flash will be attributed to Well’s untimely demise. They will aid Barry in analyzing what changes the new Speed Force has brought to his powers. Their return will also be met with open doors for several potentially dramatic storylines. Will Cisco be upset that Barry went ahead and tried to create the Speed Force without him and the material that could have possibly prevented the loss of Wells? Are Caitlin and Killer Frost jumping back into work too soon after their recovery? Regardless, the return of the original, valued members of Team Flash will be welcomed by fans.
