The Batman Actor Didn’t Recognize Colin Farrell In Penguin Makeup On Set

The Batman actor Rupert Penry-Jones admits he didn't recognize Colin Farrell on set when he was in his Penguin prosthetics. Despite being one of the most eagerly anticipated projects on DC's upcoming slate, The Batman has endured a longer than expected journey to the big screen. Production began early last year, with Robert Pattinson stepping into the role of Bruce Wayne alongside a star-studded supporting cast. However, the coronavirus pandemic forced a delay, and The Batman has experienced multiple stops and restarts ever since. Right now, The Batman is expected to continue filming until March, and it won't debut in theaters for another year afterward.

Luckily, this feels like a movie that will be worth the wait. Set in Bruce's second year as Batman, the film will follow him as he investigates a string of gruesome murders that have rocked Gotham City. The Batman is filled with some familiar figures from his comics rogues gallery, including the Riddler (Paul Dano) and the Penguin. In regards to the latter, director Matt Reeves has hinted that The Batman's Penguin isn't a fully formed version of the iconic villain just yet.

Farrell has adopted some serious prosthetics for the Penguin, and they've left him so unrecognizable that those on set didn't even realize it was him. Penry-Jones, who plays an unidentified victim in The Batman, recently appeared on British talk show This Morning and shared a fun story from the DC movie's set. He recalled how he noticed a very confident, talkative guy walking around and had assumed he was merely a supporting player. However, Penry-Jones soon realized this was no background extra. He said:

I arrived on set and there was this guy walking around who was being so over confident. I had no idea who he was. He was being really friendly, he was telling all these stories, I was like, 'Who is this guy?' I thought he might've been a supporting actor [an extra to you and me]. He kept on talking to me, just really friendly, really nice, and I started noticing things about his costume. He had a brace on his leg and these weird scars on his face, and I thought, 'This is quite a lot of effort they've gone to for a supporting artist...' and suddenly I realized, 'Wait a minute this guy must be playing the Penguin, oh my God that's Colin Farrell!'

Fans got a glimpse of Farrell's Penguin look in The Batman's first trailer last August, yet not everyone noticed it at the time. There was widespread shock across the internet as people gradually realized one particular man in the clip was actually Farrell, hidden under his prosthetics and makeup. Clearly, that confusion extended to The Batman's set as well, further highlighting just how impressive Farrell's appearance is. It will be quite interesting to see how it all comes together in the film.

Much of the attention so far has actually been centered on Dano's Riddler, since the Batman trailer revealed him to be the murderer Bruce is locked in conflict with. Audiences have seen even less of him, since his look has so far been kept to a ski mask and goggles. Hopefully, more official looks at The Batman will emerge soon to help tide fans over until its release next year. With so much intrigue surrounding the project, it would be a relief to learn something new.
