Pacific Rim: The Black teaser trailer reveals the first footage and release date. Netflix’s all-new animated series is based on the popular 2013 sci-fi film Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro. Starring Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), and Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses), Pacific Rim involves an opening at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean called “the Breach,” through which giant monsters called “Kaiju” emerge. Humanity would fight back and repel these beasts via the use of heavily armed, colossal, shared-pilot robot mechs called “Jaegers.”
A theatrical hit with favorable reviews, Pacific Rim, would spawn a sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising in 2018, directed by Steven S. DeKnight. Kikuchi and Day would reprise their roles from the first picture, and joining the cast in the second installment were Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad) and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). The Pacific Rim sequel was not received nearly as well as its predecessor, audiences, or critics, which was reflected in its very modest take at the box office. However, enough interest remained in the budding franchise for a new anime spinoff series announced that same year to be streaming on Netflix.
Courtesy of Netflix’s Twitter account NX, fans have finally been given the release date of March 4th and treated to a first look at Pacific Rim: The Black. As a “teaser,” there is only a limited amount of information. Still, it does provide a glimpse at the two new protagonists suiting up and preparing to “drift” — the mental merging process of co-piloting the giant robot mechs. Also visible are some brief shots of their Jaeger, still half-buried beneath the earth. You can watch the video below:
The trailer skews very “post-apocalyptic” as humanity appears to be losing the global war against its raging, deep-sea enemies. Mention is made of multiple breaches and the falling of cities across Australia, as teenage sister and brother, Haley and Taylor, embark on a quest to discover their missing parents' whereabouts. Utilizing the abandoned Jaeger found in the wasteland, the duo will inevitably be playing host to many Kaiju scraps along the way.
March 4 is the perfect time for Pacific Rim: The Black to debut on Netflix as Godzilla vs. Kong is due in theaters and on HBO Max the same month. Interest in giant monster battling will be amped up in anticipation, and the Pacific Rim anime series can serve as a satisfying appetizer leading up to the epic showdown. There’s even been speculation over possible future crossover tie-ins between the Kaiju of Pacific Rim and those in Godzilla’s monsterverse. If that were ever to happen, how it would ultimately look is anyone’s guess, but for now, Pacific Rim: The Black’s premiere is just two months away, and the monsters and machines are ready to rumble.
