The Binding Of Isaac: Repentance PC Release Date Set For March 2021

A new trailer for The Binding of Isaac: Repentance has dropped, revealing a PC release date of March 31, 2021. The DLC was first revealed back in 2018 and it was only some months ago that series fans finally got a Repentance progress report from developer Edmund McMillen.

The DLC incorporates a lot of content from the fanmade Antibirth expansion and is set to be the final update to the game, adding over 500 hours of new gameplay. Among its additions include 130+ new items, 25+ new bosses, 100+ new enemies, 2 new characters, 5,000+ new room layouts, 100+ new achievements, and a full “alternate path” with its own new chapters, final boss, and ending. McMillen, who had previously created Super Meat Boy (although not involved in the disappointing sequel, Super Meat Boy Forever), describes Repentance as adding so much new content to the game that it is more of a sequel than an expansion.

Revealed in a new trailer released by Edmund McMillen, The Binding of Isaac: Repentance finally has a firm PC release date of March 31, 2021. This puts it just at the end of Q1 2021, earlier than the previously listed release window of Q2 2021. Console releases are planned, as well, but the trailer provides no release date for those versions other than “later”. Along with the trailer, McMillen expresses his team’s excitement to finally bring the DLC to release, mentioning that they are doing more testing than their previous release to ensure a smooth launch experience. He goes on to credit the trailer’s creator, Denver-based motion designer Alex Hicks, and notes that fans may notice several references contained within it.

Repentance is set to be the final Binding of Isaac release with publisher Nicalis after the publisher’s owner was accused of toxicity and unprofessional conduct. McMillen announced back in 2019 that he would be severing his working relationship with the company following the DLC’s release. Although Repentance is billed as the “final” DLC for the game, this is not the first time McMillen has used the term, so it remains to be seen if the game will receive any updates past it.

If it really is the final DLC though, it is shaping up to be a solid finale for a game that has helped define the action roguelike genre over the past decade. The Binding of Isaac is consistently ranked as one of the best indie games ever made and having more and more content added to it over the years has really cemented itself in that position. With Repentance, it is nice to see fan-favorite content from an unofficial mod make it in too – it really shows the close relationship the game has with its community. It will be interesting to see if that community continues to expand on the game even after the DLC’s release.
