Its' now one day away from The Game Awards 2020, and fans can't wait to see what the awards show will have in store, but Microsoft is warning fans not to hope for another Xbox Series X-level announcement. Host Geoff Keighley and a handful of presenters will recognize the year's best games and their achievements, and one lucky title will earn the coveted Game of the Year award. On top of that, The Game Awards are notoriously a hub for major game announcements, with more than a dozen already confirmed for this year's show. Fans have speculated recently that Microsoft will be one of many gaming giants to deliver a huge announcement, whether it be about Xbox or other projects.
As fans may recall, Microsoft dropped a huge bombshell during The Game Awards 2019 - a full reveal of the Xbox Series X, formerly known as Xbox Scarlett. While it wasn't totally surprising to see the Xbox developer reveal some news about its newest console, viewers didn't really expect to see the system itself. Microsoft head Phil Spencer even demonstrated the power of the Series X during the show with a sample of the new Hellblade: Senua's Saga. The reveal was major, and fans have been wondering if Microsoft will top it with something even better at The Game Awards 2020.
Unfortunately, as Xbox Games Marketing General Manager Aaron Greenberg revealed this week, Microsoft's presence at the awards show won't be very groundbreaking. According to Greenberg, Microsoft will be encouraging fans to watch The Game Awards this year to hear some news, but viewers should "dial expectations way down." Greenberg did confirm that Microsoft will have "a couple moments" in the show, but nothing as substantial as last year's Series X reveal.
This may be disappointing for some fans, but to be fair, Microsoft one-upping its own console reveal is probably no easy task. Greenberg didn't tease anything about specific about Microsoft's involvement in The Game Awards this year, but there does seem to be some news coming, even if it's not very big. Some recent points of speculation included the future of Xbox cloud gaming (formerly known as Project xCloud), the highly-anticipated Gears 5 DLC, and Xbox's new studio, The Initiative.
The Game Awards 2020 is already slated to be jam-packed with industry news, including announcements about Among Us, Fall Guys, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and more. The show will not be held in person this year, but rather live streamed from three different locations across the world. Plus, Gal Gadot and Brie Larson have already been confirmed as presenters. No matter what Microsoft may or may not have in store, The Game Awards will be big this year, so be sure to tune in on December 10 at 7 p.m. ET.
