Jim Carrey Announces His Resignation as SNL's Joe Biden

Jim Carrey will no longer play President-elect Joe Biden on Saturday Night LiveSNL is the longest-running televised sketch show. The show has certainly had its peaks and valleys in regards to ratings, but has managed to stay on the air for 46 seasons. Since this season of SNL covered an election period, the show is currently at one of its biggest highs since the early 2000s despite the COVID-19 regulations that it has had to adhere to. Additionally, SNL's current cast is its most diverse.

SNL has become renowned for its political content. During election years, nearly all of the show's cold opens depict the most timely political events, usually in an extremely satirical manner. Once SNL picks an actor to play a political character, it is usually a guaranteed weekly role for as long as the figure is relevant. Some previous castings include Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, Amy Poehler as Hilary Clinton (who was later replaced by Kate McKinnon), Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, and Jay Pharoah as Barack Obama. Many actors have confessed that while it is a coveted role, it comes with plenty of pressure.

On Saturday morning, Carrey confirmed that he will no longer be playing Biden on SNL. Carrey tweeted that he is stepping away from his role in his classic comedic fashion. He acknowledged that even though he would have at least four more years of playing the role since Biden was elected, he will be passing on the opportunity to play the president-elect to another actor. He did not mention whether he'd make one last appearance as Biden on this episode or not.

While some Carrey fans are disappointed that he won't be returning as Biden, it may be for the better. Many fans didn't love his portrayal of the president-elect. Many felt that he wasn't a good fit for the role and that he has missed the mark on his performances thus far. His manic energy that is perfect for roles like The Grinch or The Mask doesn't necessarily work for Biden. While he is an extremely talented comedic actor, it's true that not every actor can or should play just any role. Additionally, playing a political figure has proved to be a stressful task for SNL actors. Baldwin, for one, is happy that the pressure is off of him, and Carrey probably should be too.

So who will be stepping up to "comedy’s highest call of duty?" Some fans have pitched SNL veteran Jason Sudeikis to play the role. Sudeikis has played the role in the past, and fans believe he did an even better job than Carrey. Another easy and somewhat predictable fix would be Kate McKinnon. The talented comedian is a natural impressionist and has already tackled several political figures on the show like Hilary Clinton. Fans will have to keep tuning in Saturday nights to find out who the next Biden will be.
