Sony has released a new trailer highlighting some of PlayStation 5's biggest games, and it seems Gran Turismo 7 could be the console's next true exclusive after Astro's Playroom and Demon's Souls. PS5 already has a few notable exclusive titles to its name, but, thus far, the vast majority of them are cross-gen adventures that also run on PS4.
Next year won't provide too much of a difference on this front. Horizon Forbidden West could very well go down as the platform's biggest release in 2021, for example. However, it will also launch day-and-date on PlayStation 4. And timed console exclusives like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo will also roll out on PC, alongside their respective PS5 releases. So how many true next-gen exclusives will PS5 have under its belt come this time next year? For now, the number seems rather limited.
In PlayStation's latest trailer for its new hardware, a handful of games are listed for 2021. Fewer still are noted as coming to PS5 only; Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 7 counts as one such game. And, depending on when it launches, it could be the recently released console's first genuine exclusive in a post-Demon's Souls world. This especially appears to be the case, since the trailer reiterates what was previously teased in another ad, Gran Turismo 7 remains on track for 2021.
Depending on what date Sony actually sets for the racing sim, another title may count as PS5's next genuine exclusive, though. The project in question is none other than Insomniac Games' Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which the studio previously said would hit stores during the PS5's launch window. (When that rather arbitrary window will end is anyone's guess at present.) Plus, billboards that recently went up in Glasgow suggest Insomaniac's next title may launch sooner than some are expecting.
Apart from Gran Turismo 7, Rift Apart is the only first-party title, as far as the public knows, that will release exclusively on Sony's new hardware in 2021. Meanwhile, God of War: Ragnarök, whose announcement trailer from a few months ago featured a "2021" tag, remains a mystery in terms of which PlayStation platforms it is expected to arrive on. Upon recently being asked about that matter specifically, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan merely answered with the following statement, "Sorry. I’ve got nothing to say about that today." With the year coming to an end, hopefully some of these games will receive more concrete release details sometime soon.
