NBC released a new behind-the-scenes photo of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical, featuring Glee actor Matthew Morrison’s transformation into the titular lead. The Grinch Musical is a new studio musical event that will be broadcast on December 9, 2020. The musical will be another reimagining of the iconic Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas, just in time for the holidays. There has been plenty of past film and TV adaptations of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with the most recent animated film from Illumination released in 2018. Now, NBC is getting in on the Grinch action.
The first look at NBC’s The Grinch Musical came on Thanksgiving last week as part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, during which the network released a sneak peek video featuring Morrison as The Grinch. Morrison’s portrayal of the storybook character was described as uniquely terrifying. Viewers took to Twitter to explain just how uncomfortable Morrison’s version of The Grinch made them feel.
Now, a new on-set photo published by People shows how Morrison is transforming into The Grinch for his performance. The image features Morisson with some unusual green hair extensions, along with two makeup artists delicately painting the actor’s face multiple shades of green. In the article, Morrison also comments on how excited he is to play the Grinch character, stating that he hopes he’ll bring something different to the role.
“It's really a beautiful thing to bring live theater into people's living rooms. I feel like I get to bring a lot of my dance background into this role, which I don't think has really been done with the Grinch before.”
Morrison is most well known for his previous role on the popular musical show Glee, where he played Will Schuester, the Spanish teacher, and leader of the high school’s Glee Club. While Morrison may not be immediately recognizable in the image above, The Grinch and his character on Glee share one similarity: strong uncomfortable energy. In recent months, former Glee fans have pointed out the strange vibes surrounding Mr. Schuester and a few elements of the series that make the character seem a little unhinged.
To be clear, this chaotic energy is a fantastic thing. The similarity between these two characters points to why Morrison is a solid casting choice for The Grinch. As Jim Carrey made clear with his performance in 2000, The Grinch is a chaotic and frightening character that always does the unexpected. So, if this image of Matthew Morrison in eyebrow extensions is nightmare fuel for you, then it’s just a sign that NBC’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical is doing something right.
