A fan of both Final Fantasy 7 and Genshin Impact wants the same excitement that Super Smash Bros. fans received when Sephiroth appeared as the next playable character in Nintendo's crossover fighting game. The antagonist of Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most popular bad guys in gaming history, ranking right up there with Bowser and Dr. Robotnik for those of a certain generation. The 2020 release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake only brought him back into prominence alongside his nemesis Cloud and the rest of the cast from Square's classic game. The gaming landscape has changed a lot since the PlayStation 1 days, but the appeal of these characters certainly hasn't waned in the interim.
Square Enix is very aware of this fact, which is why Cloud and Sephiroth are often front and center when it comes to Final Fantasy representation outside the main series. He is included alongside Donald, Goofy, and a host of other Disney characters in the Kingdom Hearts series, appearing in four entries so far. He has also appeared in several entries in the Itadaki Street series, which is known as Fortune Street in North America. Outside the realm of Square Enix and Nintendo, Sephiroth was included as an add-on costume for Sackboy in the first two LittleBigPlanet games.
If Square Enix were to team up with a new franchise past Smash Bros., uber-popular gatcha RPG Genshin Impact would be a prime candidate, and Redditor n3ong imagined exactly what would happen in that scenario. The crossover star is a 45-star character, which is a stretch considering that the rarest characters in the actual game only have five stars. Still, if the developers at miHoYo were to implement crossovers, those famed gaming icons would likely surpass anything available currently in the game in terms of rarity.
It certainly wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for a free to play game like Genshin Impact to consider adding Final Fantasy heroes to its roster, and it wouldn't even be strange in terms of recent crossovers. Smite, an action MOBA about gods duking it out, recently added the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as playable skins. Ubisoft's Brawlhalla lets players pit "Macho Man" Randy Savage against Rayman and Hellboy, and World of Tanks has war machines inspired by everyone from John Rambo to the cast of Valkyria Chronicles. At least Sephiroth would fit in among all the other JRPG trappings of Genshin Impact.
As 2021 approaches, it seems like Genshin Impact will only grow in popularity, and that may make the demand for more traditional free-to-play style content hard to ignore. As more fans jump on board and the developer continues to scale out for more growth, keeping the train rolling by teaming with other franchises is an easy way forward. This is especially true in a game about collecting characters and items. While Sephiroth's appearance in the game is unlikely to happen simply due to Square Enix's track record, the prospect of some form of crossover feels like a win/win for everyone involved, so it seems far more likely.
