Batman Writer James Tynion Confirms More New Characters Coming To DC

DC fans have a lot to look forward to as Batman writer James Tynion IV recently confirmed the arrival of new characters coming soon to Gotham City. He was referring to the batch of Batman titles that will be hitting stores in March 2021  hot off the trail of DC's latest line-wide event Future State. With these new Batman titles come not only the introduction of several new characters, but also a long-awaited showcasing of many beloved secondary characters in their own spinoff titles.

Tynion is no rookie in the Batman universe. Fans may recognize him from his work on Batman Eternal, a 52-issue run that spanned from 2014-2015. Since then, Tynion has penned multiple notable works including The Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol 1 and his recent series Something is Killing The Children. Throughout his work on Batman, Tynion has introduced a number of memorable characters to the Batman family like Clownhunter, Punchline, or the rival vigilante Ghost-Maker. Now, as Tynion shifts gears towards his next slate of the Batman titles, he's making sure to pen the upcoming installments with a whole lot of surprises.

Tynion recently sat down with Newsarama to chat about his plans for the future of the Batman universe and confirmed there will  be new characters introduced into the Batman family. "Both heroes and villains will be introduced both in the Batman book and in the Joker book," Tynion said before adding how much fun he has when creating new characters. This comes as no surprise since his original characters have been incredibly popular. When asked if he would add in more characters to the Batman universe, he responded, "Absolutely. I mean, at this point I can't stop myself. I'm just having fun. This is part of the thing that I think is so exciting about the new slate as it's kind of built right now...(it) allows us to do a lot of short-form content that focuses on supporting cast members in the larger Gotham mythos."

Although Tynion remained closed-lipped about the specifics of the new characters coming into the spotlight in 2021, he did share his excitement with finding homes for all of the characters he had created over the past year. After the destruction left behind by "Joker War," ClownHunter will have an entire origin story in  Batman Annual #5, which goes on sale December 29. Ghost-maker will also have an appearance in the 2021 lineup and it's rumored he will be an interesting foil to Batman's endeavors. Tynion also revealed that Scarecrow will be Batman's main villain in 2021.

This is big news for Batman fans as well as DC fans in general. Tynion has a knack for creating memorable characters that stick in the universe. With his keen ability to craft complex, vivid characters paired with his dark, gritty tone, fans can anticipate nothing but memorable characters from these upcoming Batman titles.
