AGDQ 2021 Starts Sunday With Donkey Kong Country, Dragon Age, & More

The beginning of 2021 draws near, and that means that Games Done Quick is ready to ring in the new year with a weeklong speed-running event for charity. Starting as a grassroots effort ten years ago, GDQ has grown into a big business in the world of gaming events. The company's biannual events draw in tens of thousands of viewers on Twitch, all of whom are eager to see games utterly destroyed in ways they've never seen before. Throw in a few world record achievements here and there and the events are a reliably memorable window into runners and the games they dedicate their lives to.

In recent years, Games Done Quick has taken advantage of their built-in followers from the main events, hosting daily themed live streams from prominent speedrunners structured like episodes of TV shows. Called The GDQ Hotfix, the subject matter can range from tutorials on how to speedrun certain games to collections of themed runs to tournaments, to history lessons about various aspects of the hobby. In addition to the scheduled content, the company also uses the channel to spotlight "new and exciting developments" in the speedrunning community whenever they pop up.

As the event enters its second decade, the schedule for Awesome Games Done Quick is full of interesting runs as well as staples of the yearly happening. Unlike most years, AGDQ will be an online-only affair due to the ongoing events of the global pandemic, with runners presenting their talents from the comfort of their own homes.

Sunday, January 3rd will start things off with a 46-minute run of Mirror's Edge, followed by Donkey Kong Country, Dragon Age, and the 2016 version of Ratchet & Clank throughout the day. Highlights for the day also include an almost two-hour-long 100% run through Diddy Kong Racing and a two-runner race through the main quest of Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

As is usually the case with GDQ's main events, the stream will present runs continuously throughout the week, even late into the night. Tuning in during unusual hours will usually give viewers an unusual show, and AGDQ 2021 continues the tradition of the Awful Games Done Quick block early Thursday morning. Games based on Filmation's Snow White ripoff and The Lawnmower Man await those brave enough to tune in, although the runners are typically aware of the reason one might watch such an endeavor.

Even if they no longer end things by killing the animals in Super MetroidGames Done Quick still has a lot of fun events to look forward to over the course of the week. There are many newer indie hits making their debut on the speedrunning stage, the automated TASBot will prove why robots are better at games than humans, and there will be plenty of prizes for those willing to donate their money to a good cause. As far as good intentions go, there are few events on the gaming calendar that do more good and provide more good distractions than GDQ.
