Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert are Dancing With the Stars' "it" couple. The two professional dancers met and fell in love during their time on the dance competition series. Because of their DWTS love story, fans are convinced Hough will propose to Erbert on the show.
Hough rose to fame through his long-running gig on Dancing With the Stars. He made his debut as a pro dancer back in season five and competed on the show for nine years (17 seasons) before taking a hiatus to work on other projects. After winning the Mirrorball Trophy a historical six times, Hough returned this season as a fill-in judge for Len Goodman. During his time on the show, he met his current girlfriend and fellow dancer, Hayley Erbert. A fellow veteran, Erbert has been competing on DWTS for six seasons. For the current season, the pair hit the dancefloor together for a couple's dance.
Once their performance was announced, fans instantly began questioning if Hough planned on proposing on the show. "I'm just going to be straight up, that's not happening," Hough told ET. "Just because, that's just not my style I don't think, you know?" The couple, who began dating in 2015, have started sharing more of their relationship with fans through their YouTube channel. They recently teased an engagement pending their subscriber count. "Even though on [our] YouTube we said, 'Hey, if we get 500,000 subscribers then we'll do it.' Of course that was a joke," Hough explained. "But also I was like, it's a joke, but if it happens...," he continued, laughing. "I'm just kidding!"
In a recent YouTube video, Hough revealed that he has been ring shopping. "I don't know timelines, I just know shapes," he jokingly shared with the outlet when asked about his future proposal. He went on to explain what made him and Erbert decide to launch their YouTube, saying how "exhausting" it got for them to keep their relationship private. "It's just tiring," he shared. "It was liberating, honestly, just being like, 'Hey, this is our relationship. This is cool. This is what it is and it's great.'"
When it comes to why the couple was so private, to begin with, Hough said, "I think I just kind of got almost conditioned to feel or believe that I have to hide everything, when in reality I was just like, 'You know what? There's a freedom to just being open about it.'" In fact, the couple feels like their vlogging has made their bond even stronger. "It's been wonderful and it's brought us closer together in certain things," he added.
Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8 pm ET on ABC.
