Vampire Diaries: What Stefan Said To Elena After He Died

On The Vampire Diaries series finale, after Stefan Salvatore died, he said one last goodbye to Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev) and passed on a message to his wife, Caroline Forbes. The Vampire Diaries was created by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson and was one of The CW's most popular shows during its eight-season run. It developed a cult following and spawned two spin-offs, Legacies and The Originals. The series finale was a highly anticipated episode because it marked Dobrev's return after exiting the series following season 6.

Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries was its darkest, tackling religious constructs such as Hell and the Devil. Stefan and Damon Salvatore's long histories of violence had them questioning what awaited them after death - eternal damnation or a peaceful afterlife.  During the finale "I Was Feeling Epic," the brothers and their friends battled arguably the show's biggest bad, Katherine Pierce (Dobrev reprised her role as the evil Petrova doppelganger.) Katherine planned to use the Maxwell Bell to unleash Hellfire, which would incinerate everything for miles. Bonnie and generations of Bennett witches combined their magical powers to push the fire back, sending it to Hell and destroying the realm where tortured souls suffered perpetual punishment. Stefan was waiting with Katherine, ensuring she was in Hell when it was destroyed.

Following Stefan's death, he reunited with Elena, who was still in a "spiritual coma" - a spell cast on her by Kai Parker. Neither living nor dead, Elena existed in a purgatorial state that allowed her to interact with Stefan (Elena had a similar experience at the start of the episode with Bonnie, whose heart briefly stopped.) The former flames reunited in the hallways of Mystic Falls High School, where they first met. Stefan's appearance shocked fans who believed Damon died a hero after he compelled Stefan to walk away. Stefan's conversation with Elena revealed the truth. Stefan injected Damon with the Cure and took his place at the 11th hour. Stefan explained to Elena why he was willing to make such a huge sacrifice. "Tonight I saw a side of Damon that I hadn't seen in a while. The older brother I looked up to ... I wanted that Damon to live. And I wanted you to have the opportunity to get to know him. He's the better man. He's the right man."

At long last, the question of which Salvatore would get the girl was resolved (Elena and Damon's post-Vampire Diaries' lives were referenced on Legacies). As the two shared a hug, Stefan whispered something indistinct into Elena's ear and once Bonnie broke the sleeping spell, Elena revealed what Stefan said: his final words were for Caroline. "One day, when you wake up, tell Caroline I heard her. And I will love her forever, too." He was referring to a voicemail Caroline left for Stefan in the moments before his death that absolved him of any guilt for choosing to stand by Damon instead of leaving Mystic Falls with her. "I need you to know that I understand. I love you. I will love you ... forever."

Despite the demise of a beloved character, The Vampire Diaries finished on an uplifting note. Many fan favorites returned for brief cameos, including Jeremy Gilbert, Tyler Lockwood, and Jenna Sommers. There was even a letter from Klaus Mikaelson that gave long-time Klaus-Caroline shippers a reason to hope that the twosome would connect in the future. It wasn't exactly the ending Plec and Williamson originally had planned, but Dobrev's departure changed the show's trajectory. Plec had envisioned Elena and Stefan somehow rekindling their romance, and both Salvatores dying to save the girl they loved. However, the final two seasons focused on the complicated relationship between the brothers, and ultimately, Stefan got what he always wanted - redemption for turning Damon into a monster.
